The movie..."Canadian Bacon."

Starring John Candy, Alan Alda, Rhea Perlman…halfway decent movie…directed by…I didn’t know this until today…
Michael Moore???

Yes that Michael Moore. His only non documentary.

I was surprised when I found that out a few months ago too. Our digital cable guide always lists the directors, and I thought it had to be a different Michael Moore. Surprise! Who’d of thought he had a good sense of humor?

Well, if you’d already seen Roger & Me, you’d know he has a great sense of humor.

If you then watched Canadian Bacon, you’d wonder where it went.

Other than a few fits and starts, it’s not all that good.

I really liked Canadian Bacon. I’ve been meaning to buy it on DVD someday.

Well, we always knew he was a master of fiction.

I saw Roger and Me…I thought it was sad, not funny. OTOH, I was only 14 when I saw it.

Meh. Even John Candy couldn’t save it. Of course, when there actually was some funny in the movie, John was the one dishing it out.

This was actually the first movie of his I saw. He gave a speech in one of my film classes soon afterwards, and I was all excited about getting his autograph. Then I realized what a dumb ass he was, so I left. Eh.

Still, I thought the movie had it’s moments.

[SPOILER]Like the bit at the hokey game where they’re just insulting everything Canada should hold dear, but the second they say “Yeah, and their beer sucks” the entire stadium goes quiet.

The bit where they get pulled over for driving a truck with Canada Sucks on it and all those other slanderous remarks and are forced to do them all in French as well.

And my personal favorite, where they special forces are running through the field and the one guy stubs his toe. As he gets ready to get back up, one of the other guys just stomps on his chest and shoots him in the head. That was funny.[/spoilers]

There’s more funny stuff than just John Candy. What about Stephen Write?

The ‘prison’ scenes? Eh. Too predictable. Also, I don’t tend to find Write (Wright?) funny, so that slants my opinion. (OK. I get it, Mr.Wright. You deliver shtick in a dead-pan monotone. Timeless comedy it aint. Meh.)

I had never seen this movie until fairly recently. I found it extremely amusing, especially the beginning where the dumbass is trying to commit suicide and is so incompetent that he can’t even do that. Plus the police cheering him on to earn bonuses for fishing his dead body out of the river was just so horrible it made you laugh to keep from screaming.

I was also suprised to see the director’s name. I had never before seen a Michael Moore film and was suprised I liked this one. From reading about some of his other work I tend to doubt I’d like most others.

Enjoy,
Steven

I’ve only seen two Micheal Moore films, namely “Canadian Bacon” and “Bowling for Columbine”, but I found “Canadian Bacon” to be the better of the two. Probably because Canadian Bacon was trying to be funny more then it was trying to be politicial, and Bowling lost a lot of points with me in the last 20 minutes because it got so Godawful preachy.
