The Mysterious Cities of Gold

Does anyone else remember this show? It was my favorite when I was a kid. I liked it so much that I would get up at 5 am to watch it on Nickelodeon. I wanted to have adventures like Esteban, and I wanted a solar powered condor.

I believe that it was very popular in France (it was a French/Japanese prodcution) , Canada, and the UK; most people I know have never heard of it.

There is no fully legal way to see these in the US, but a French DVD is coming out. French ONLY unfortunately.

They don’t make kids cartoons as good as that anymore.

I remember it. It used to be on the ABC (our government owned national broadcaster) before my favourite show of all time - Degrassi Junior High.

I loved that show when it was on Nickelodeon! One of my all time favorites, and it spawned an all-consuming (for a time) interest in Incan and Mayan history.

Here’s a page selling episodes on CD:

Another “me too” on remembering it! My mom loved the show, too; go figure.

Anyone else remember Spartakus? I think it was on after Mysterious Cities of Gold.

If that’s “Spartacus And The Sun” then I remember it. It was the most trippy cartoon ever! The theme music always made me feel… wierd. But it was loopy to say the least.

I loved that show!!! What a brilliant piece of fantasy for a young mind!

I loved it too. In fact I have the entire series on tape and recently watched it again. (those Whatchamacallit commercials also brought me back).

There were also some rumors last year about bringing it back for a second season since it ended so fortuitously, with Esteban, Zia and Tau about to go out and explore the world. But nothing seems to have come from it.

Oh, I’ve heard that Nick wont reshow it because it couldn’t get a low enough rating to show for children. I’ve also heard that the same thing happened in Australia. That’s one of the worst things about corporate culture, everybody is so damn cautious about everything.

P.S. what boy didn’t have a huge cruch on Zia?

Sure do, never did see it all the way to the end though, would love to see it again. They lost me when that other strange flying contraption  showed up.
Geez thanks, now I can’t stop singing the theme song
AAhAhAhAhAh wishing for the cities of Gold
AAhAhAhAhAh some day we will find the cities of Gold.
Dobediedoodo do aahahahaaaaaaaargh cough

For some reason, whenever I watch a movie that takes place in midieval times or prior and I see lanters, I always get this scene where Estaban and his friends are talking with an Incan and he tells them thier lamps burn blue flames because they use lama droppings, and then Estaban has a little image pop in his head of a lama taking a poop. It just seemed so odd, it stuck in my head and won’t let go.

But yes, I remember the show and miss it. I’m sure if I saw it now, it wouldn’t be nearly as impressive, but it was fun nonetheless.

And Sparticus was a different show. That took place in the center of the earth, whereas “City of Gold” took place in South/Central America during the “Age of Discovery.”

I recently found a copy of that eposode. That part is funny.

Did you know that there was a 3 minute educational documentary with each show, but the english versions of them were only broadcast in South Aftrica and Austrailia? There were also some scenes cut from the Nick and BBC versions because of "Damn’ and “Hell” even though there are plenty og damns and hells left in. Censors are weird.
