One thing that kind of kills me is, the Dems have been in control of one house of Congress for… what? Three months? They’ve barely had time to pick their Speaker, organize their committees, ask for/subpoena records and persons, read the redacted Mueller report, arrange their priorities, and people are calling for Pelosi’s head because she hasn’t charged into the impeachment mess yesterday.

FFS, give the lady some room. I think she and her caucus have done a rather phenomenal job of getting organized and pursuing their goals in an orderly yet speedy fashion. She will impeach. She has more to worry about than if some impatient constituents don’t think it’s moving fast enough to suit them.

Before hating on Pelosi for moving more slowly than some would like, I think it’s important to recognize she is safeguarding against three concerns as best she can:

1. In order to make sure her committee leaders can present their best cases to the courts, including the SCOTUS, she is demonstrating all possible options are exhausted before taking the step of appealing to the courts. If she and her committee leaders fail to do that, they leave open the option for conservative courts to assert that those options were not exhausted, and therefore motions for relief have a basis to be denied.

2. Some members of her caucus are in very red districts, at present making for very uncomfortable situations between them and their constituents. She wants to make sure those members aren’t going to be run out on a rail for supporting impeachment.

3. She wants to win the Senate in 2020. In order to do that, she has to demonstrate that if the current craven senators vote to acquit Trump in the face of overwhelming evidence of criminal wrongdoing, then they should be replaced.

She just wants a little time to build her case. Is that so much to ask?

If the Democrats were truly doing absolutely nothing, as in no investigations, then Pelosi’s critics would have a point. But that’s not the case. The House is investigating. They’re issuing subpoenas. They’re requesting records. There is an attempt at oversight.

Trump is simply refusing to comply, and this is where Pelosi’s knowledge of politics comes into play. Sure, she could press forward with impeachment, but why would she do that when she knows voters won’t punish Republicans and may well punish her party for that move?

Let Trump prove what a moron he is, because once he loses support, it won’t matter what he wants the courts or various executive agencies to do.

…here’s what you don’t get. We don’t know this. Its Schrödinger’s pedestrian. You are guessing the pedestrian dies in your scenario but I’m not so sure. You are assuming the pedestrian doesn’t die in my scenario but I don’t know why you would assume that.

This is just speculation though and you admit that. The base isn’t the problem. Rampant voter suppression, Russian interference, the team formerly known as Cambridge Analytica, State sanctioned propaganda, suspect voting machines, stacked federal courts and gerrymandering: all of these issues are much more important than a “riled up base.” A riled up base won’t ensure he wins in 2020. Focusing all of your attention on both trying to “not rile up the base” and “trying to win over the base” will do infinitely more harm in my opinion to the Dems 2020 chances than impeachment ever will.

Of course I’ve “looked at it” from that side of things. I said in the other thread that I initially believed that Pelosi’s calculus was correct. After “looking at things from another side” I changed my mind. So perhaps I’m not the one who needs to look at this from another perspective.

So we are both speculating. I’m very much back and forth for impeachment.

One side of me says of course. It’s the law. It should be done.
The other is not so sure, that it may empower the stupid fuck.

In the end, I have to say yes, impeach. I think that’s what will happen, but the House isn’t going to do it until every dam bit of criminal activity they can get is accounted for. Subpoenas may not get them any more evidence but more obstruction of justice charges. So be it. It’s different ammo. But it’s ammo.

As this is happening, Trump continues to step on his own… tie, and loses his shit.

I’ve said in this thread that I like and respect Pelosi and that the way she played the shut-down was absolutely correct. Just because you disagree with Warren doesn’t mean you have to attack her, accuse her of “grandstanding” or make a meaningless comparison to Pelosi. This says more about your position than anything else that you have said.

I may be wrong, but I am also beginning to see an uptick in the number of conservatives who are willing to challenge the president publicly. Chris Wallace of Fox News called out AG Barr and also pointed out that Pelosi has gotten under his skin. Sen. Joni Ernst challenged Trump on North Korea. Rep. Tim Hurd just called out Trump’s spread of the fake Pelosi video. Yes, it’s mostly soft criticism, but it’s becoming more frequent - it could be simply a result of the fact that Trump is becoming more and more unhinged and giving people more material to work with.

Just to be clear, in case I wasn’t already, I’ve never said Pelosi and the Dems shouldn’t impeach Trump. Just not until there is enough evidence to suggest that it would have a snowball’s chance of resulting in a conviction in the Senate. But I really think that Pelosi’s approach is the right one.

Trump wants the House to move on impeachment before an impeachment would work, because then the pressure to move on from Russia would be on the Democrats going into the election. By moving on, I mean not only moving on from the threat of impeachment but the entire episode. Trump wants us to rush into impeachment, so he can declare victory and push the entire scandal behind him. By showing restraint, Pelosi keeps that threat hanging over his head. He can’t forget about it. It’s constantly there and he knows it. Meanwhile, there are the committee investigations, the criminal investigations, the subpoenas, the court rulings – too many little creepy, crawly, biting insects for Trump to swat away all at once. He’s doing more unhinged shit, and he’s looking dumber and dumber. I don’t think these outbursts alone can break him, but the create background. They plant seeds. When the price of the trade war becomes too steep, when a recession happens, or when we get into another stupid war, then I think that’s when the tide will turn.
