The Nebraska Dept. of Revenue didn’t send me the usual booklet and forms for this year’s income tax. I got a PIN number and a recommendation that I file either by Tele-File or Nebfile, their free e-file system.
Because part of my income is regular wages and the rest is paid to me as an independent contactor, I have to file 1040, not 1040A or 1040 EZ and attach forms SE and C-EZ.
First, I tried to Nebfile and was greeted with a message that 1040 and 1040A filers could not Nebfile at this time and that there was no estimate available as to when the system would be available to 1040 and 1040A filers.
Next, I tried to Tele-File. I wated 10 minutes pressing 1s and 3s, entering income amounts, etc. before the pre-recorded voice informed me that the system didn’t allow for inclusion of Schedule C-EZ income. I could only use this system for simple wage and interest income calculations/filings.
Why even have either system if small business owners, independent contractors, people with large enough deductions to go long-form, etc. can’t use it?
My return, other than income and tax amounts, hasn’t changed in 4 years. I’ve needed to file long-form with C-EZ and SE attached every one of the 4 years because some of my income is paid to me on an independent contract basis.
If they know that I’ll likely go long form, why send me a PIN number for systems I can’t use instead of the booklet and forms? BTW, the booklet and forms are available on their website as pdf files, but I had to find that info myself. Their “informational mailing” with its worthless PIN didn’t make that clear.
Finally, my downloaded tax form has a great big warning that because I didn’t use one of the systems that they locked me out of, my refund could take up to 3 months vice 7-10 days for Nebfile and Telefile returns.
Have a wonderful day, NDOR, you assholes!
