Not much to add except to say yes, The Negro Problem are, in fact, a great band! You really can’t go wrong with any of their CDs, but I’d personally recommend starting off with Joys & Concerns, my favorite.
I’m a huge Stew fan. Saw him at the Knitting Factory, and yes, he’s amazing.
There’s two levels of TNP… there’s the full band stuff, such as the albums Post Minstrel Syndrome and Welcome Black (two of my absolute favorites) and Joys & Concerns (which I’m not terribly familiar with), and Stew’s solo albums Guest Host and Naked Dutch Painter (which are also extremely excellent… the name of my car came from the Naked Dutch Painter song Giselle).
So, yes, I’ve heard of Stew, and am absolutely one of the Negro Problem’s biggest fans.
I love THe Negro Problem, but I love Stew more. I have all their stuff, plus two unreleased radio-station in-studios. Great, great stuff; Stew’s one of the best songwriters breathing.
