The New Battlestar Galatica....thoughts.

Tenseness is a word, but I think “tension” is probably what you were thinking of. Hey, at least you didn’t say “tensiosity”.

Yeah, this is one of the things I really noticed when I watched it the first time around-- sometime last year, when it first aired. That minimalist soundtrack adds to the darkness of the show, and emphasizes how empty space is.

I’d say this show is better than 90% of the Science Fiction movies out there. At least so far. I don’t even really mind that Starbuck is a chick-- I think they handle that pretty well.

From what i’ve seen so far, i like it, the main points have already been covered, projectile weapons, no sound in space (the only sound would be what would be heard inside the cockpits of the Colonial ships or Cylon craft, realistic space physics…

the “Cylons have religion” thing seems too much like Red Dwarf’s concept of Silicon Heaven (but where would the toasters go?), but Dwarf’s was played more for humor, and of course, the real question being…
can the BoomerBot superceed/ignore/surpass her own programming, she seemed to try to fight the urge to self destruct the surveilance craft…

the last eps i saw were the ones where Starbuck commandeers a Cylon raider (Frell, that woman has some frakkin’ mivonks, love to see her team up with Aeryn Sun, that’d be a killer team) and BoomerBot was Botnapped by the “Walking Chrome Toasters” (Band name! ) how many eps have i missed since then?
however, the “Number Six in Baltar’s head” thing seems to be rather…Harveyesque, sometimes i expect her to drawl out a “hello, John” at some point…

This Starbuck is female, but hardly a chick. She’s played as a frat boy with tits.

I would have said she’s played as a fighter pilot. It doesn’t have much to do with her gender, but her job/profession.

Besides, I know women who are just like that. What’s your definition of “chick”?

Do we have to get into arguements even in Cafe Society, Elvis?

I purposely used “chick” to contrast her with the original Starbuck/Face guy. Yeah, she’s hardly a “chick”, but she’s still female. And I think a lot of people would groan when they heard about that, but I really do think the writers make it work as something much more than just a cheap gimmick.

I know the show has been on in the UK, and a few others say they have seen some of the episodes at least. I have one question.

Please, please tell me they DON’T have socialators in this series!!! I just couldn’t take that.

Not in the eleven shows screened here, no. And Boxey hasn’t reappeared yet either, thankfully.

Interestingly, she far more masculine in the role than Dirk Benedict ever was.
And why are there no soul brotha’s in the new series?!

Thank you** Crusoe**.

The way I remember it, there are 12 humanoid models. When the blonde fembot reveals her true identity to Baltar, he says something like, “Are there any more like you?” and she says, “There are 12 models.”

I agree. I think that some or all the other 8 humanoid models may not even know that they are cylons (like the “real” Boomer). I count 5 of the blonde model also.

There are a number of Blacks on the show, but there aren’t any 80s type charicatures, if that’s what you mean.

I was a fan of the first series. Og help me, I even watched Battlestar 1980 (well, some of it at least).

After the butchery of Earthsea I wasn’t too hopeful about the SciFi channel’s treatment of this. Aside from SciFi and Earthsea, I’ve seen way too many hack jobs done on science fiction. But what the heck - watch it, right?

I am happy to say that my expectations were wrong.

Oh, it’s not exactly the same - that’s OK with me. It actually had a story to tell. A plot. Decent effects. Characters that underwent some development. No doubt there are some disappointed purists, but I’m not one of them.

It’s definitely darker - but again, that’s OK with me. I thought the grimness of the situation came across better than in the original series. The Cylons actually are credible enemies and not chronic bad shots. They’re smart, they’re clever. they’re mean.

Space physics are handled better than in the original.

I liked how they brought up some of the hard choices of command in battle - sacrificing 85 men in order to save the entire ship. Leaving behind thousands of civilians because they couldn’t save them - no last minute miracles, just hard choices and cold equations.

I did think there was a bit more screwing than necessary for the plot - I really hope we don’t degenerate into soap opera like convolutions of intimate relationships.

I was against making Starbuck a chick - but I’m willing to buy it now. “Frat boy with tits” indeed!

If there are only 50,000 people left, and they need to “make babies”, how is this going to go over with the female fighter-types?
