The NEW ChiDope3 thread (forget the other one exists)

I think you guys are seriously underestimating the hotel situation for that weekend. I called around for HOURS (over a month ago), and found nothing. Oh wait, I found one room with a rate of $399/night.

Believe me, I would love to have the party somewhere downtown. But short of all of us getting bused in and out from the suburbs, I really don’t know how it would work. However, I am sure that Valerie can come up with something.

On the bright side, the good thing about this group of people is that we seem to be able to have a blast wherever we are.

Hey, Omni, just because I’m replying to your reply point by point, please don’t take this as a Pit reply. Only slight snottiness is intended as only slight umbrage was taken at your reply.

“dropzone, I assume you haven’t been to any of the bars mentioned such as Joy Blue and Sheffields.”

Yep. I really am a boring old suburbanite and use constant mention on WXRT as an indication that Sheffield’s isn’t “low key with some atmosphere.” And Sheffields has already been dismissed by you as “major hot spots where we’d have no chance of not getting crowded out, and over run.” After all, I do read the threads.

“…and won’t pick a “singles bar” unless we find the Regal Beagle is available”

Too bad. At least I’d know how to dress. So what do you call your basic meat market these days?

“…many many low key bars with some atmosphere”

Fully agree that it’s our goal. As much fun as the club scene no doubt is, we agree about that.

“Some people are visiting the city for the first time, and it’d be nice to give them the slight bonus of seeing something a little unique along with hanging with us.”

So that leaves out Bennigans? A blues bar would give a nice taste for the out of towners, but would be just too loud and distracting.

“And the reality of the situation is alot of the suburbs’ bars aren’t much less crowded or loud than the suggested city venues.”

Very true, which is why a restaurant with a liquor license might be a better choice.

“It’ll all be discussed in due time, but keep an open mind.”

I thought this was the discussion. I am keeping my mind open, but am also trying to put forward my own views.

drop…I’m so beating your ass at this thing ;).

Actually Val kinda wants to slow the “where” debate until we pick a weekend. So this whole conversation can wait a bit.

Just an observation from an outsider to the ChiDoper area.

You all are harder to get together than a bunch of puppies for potty training.

Set your date, know that a few people may be left out (you can’t get everyone to agree with the same date) and start getting it organized.

I say you all get together the 21st, it looks most convenient for those that want to be there from the posts I have read. Those that are flying in, look to double up in rooms or those that live there offer your living room floor if you are comfortable with that (sleeping bags must be brought by the sleepees).

Okay, that sounds harsh but you all have been going back and forth about the date, the time, the where for a long time now. You are driving me nuts < giggle >.

If hotel rooms are hard to find (someone call around now, tell them you need a minimum of 10 rooms and ask for a group rate) some people don’t need the best of accomodations, they just need a place to crash and shower (even if at a Super 8 – I have stayed in a few over the years and they are fine if not bland). Those that want prettier hotel rooms can make their own reservations and deal with logistics on their own.

Anyhow, that’s my input on this situation.

Sorry if that came off as being rude, I don’t mean to do that but you people are seemingly difficult to get together!

I wuvs ya all though

Tech, I appreciate your suggestions, but they’re really not needed. This is the 3rd ChiDope I’ve organized. The first one had 8 or 9 people, the second had around 20. It may seem chaotic to you, but A, you’re not going to be there 2, this way, everyone that is interested gets a say in the gathering. In short, there’s a method to my madness. If it irritates you that much, please avoid the thread, since it doesn’t involve you.

Everything is far more under control than it may seem. All ChiDopers, worry not. I’m confident we’ll all end up having a good time, and I don’t mind taking care of the annoying details one bit. It may seem irritating that we don’t have all the details at once, but this way, it’s democratic and at least amusing to participate in.

By the way, if you guys want to bicker about the “where,” I don’t really care. Just be warned that I refuse to make any promises until I’ve confirmed everything personally.

Sorry for butting in…just thought I would add in something, didn’t mean to intrude.

And with your butt you’re welcome to!

Val’s right, of course. (Anybody who took the responsibility of organizing this off MY shoulders is ALWAYS right!) Good-natured arguments about where to go is an old Chicago pastime. I think that the dearth of potential locations in Colorado might make it seem easy to decide. (another  )

And all of these people who WANT TO FLY IN to meet the ChiDopers amazes me. I feel so—WANTED! Even if they just want to kick my ass.

I’ve got ten minutes to be bored before I jump back into the fire my work life is currently in so I thought I’d drop a quick post. Since VB is taking care of all the details I’ll continue the pointless discussion on the ‘where’ question.

Omni is right Drop. The burbs bars generally fall into 70’s neon, mirror, meat market, Saturday Night Fever wannabe holdovers. They are hardly quiet either.

Chicago probably has more bars per mile than any other city in the US (no idea really but that seems to be the case…ever tried walking from bar-to-bar in LA?). The upshot is you can find just about anything you are looking for in this city.

As for the being crowded bit I wouldn’t worry too much. Sheffield’s has a back room and unless the bar is specifically holding it for a group our group can just take it over. Sure other people will meander back there but so what? It’s still mostly ours by default. The only trick here is to start a bit earlier (maybe 6 p.m…the bars tend to pack around 8-9). The same holds true for many other places. Omni seems to have a good grasp on decent watering holes so I seriously doubt he will steer us wrong (I’ll be looking over his shoulder as well to keep him honest  ).

Techie (if you’re still reading this thread) I understood the fun you were having with your post. Don’t hate Chicago…it’s a pretty cool place. Dropzone is right…we Chicagoans bicker all the way to the bar on where we should go. That’s why there ARE so many bars so close to each other in this city. We’d end up beating the crap out of each other if we didn’t have easy access to the next bar because our ‘friend’ picked some lame-o place to start with!

I think you guys are seriously underestimating the hotel situation for that weekend. I called around for HOURS (over a month ago), and found nothing. Oh wait, I found one room with a rate of $399/night.
I’ve been trying to tell you guys this for two days. My sister is getting married on the 21st and I couldn’t get a room anywhere within a 25 mile radius. Or you could stay at the Four Seasons for $400

What’s wrong with JoyBlue? The bar in front is noisy but in the far room, its fairly calm

I emailed Val, but, yes, I am planning on attending if it is held on the 21st. The 7th is no-go and the 14th is extremely unlikely, unless my free trip to Vegas falls though. I don’t mind if we have to have the shin-dig way out in the 'burbs due to the hotel situation; if the burbs bars turn out to suck we can just go drink back at the hotel like last time.

[Edited by Gaudere on 09-14-2000 at 05:35 PM]

OF COURSE the suburban bars suck! That’s a given. I’ll call the local Motel 6 and see if they have a block. They usually aren’t very busy, there’s a pretty good pizza place with a license across the street, and a Dominicks that sells liquor, too.

And why do you mods get to edit and we can’t? That sucks.

Okay, just for giggles, I did a quick search…rooms out by O’Hare are available, and cheap. Just FYI.

Damn! Beat me to the punch by just a few minutes. I found hotel rooms out by O’Hare for $99 a night for two people.

Hee! I found $89 a night for one person at the Hampton Inn where we stayed last time.

I forgot that single rooms in Chicago were so close to $100.

The cost of Terry’s and my suite at Spiffled Renaissance was only like $129/night.

I think someday we might have to offset the cost of CD3 somehow…perhaps Spiff2?

The date is set. Oct 21 is the meeting, the hotel should be set in a day or two, and… uh… stuff. Read the mail.

If you’re not listed in the email as needing a room, it is VERY important that you let me know right away.

Something that JUST occurred to me is that I want to avoid a HUGE problem we had last time at the hotel, when they hid Veb in a closet for the whole weekend. It’d be good if we all knew each other’s real names before the date of the gathering, so that we can call the front desk and find each other if need be. Of course, we’ll probably want to do that via email. We don’t have to worry about it right now, but just don’t let me forget.

Oh, Chris, I’ll be getting us a group rate, so the rooms won’t be QUITE so spendy.

[hijack]

Chris, Flyp has already said there WILL be Spif2 next year.

[/hijack]

YAY!!!

Since there’s still plenty of time to join us,

:: bump ::

Giving this thread a bump and also giving ValerieBlaise a gentle reminder that she did promise to try and have those hotel plans put together by today.
