At the end of the “Stupid Republican” thread in the pit there’s a sidebar about Harry Potter and the following was said, by bup:
I don’t really dispute this, it is certainly a cultural phenomenon akin to michael Jackson or professional football or something like that- something to be noted and discussed when it has passed out of fancy.
What interests me about this is the thought of characters like Harry Potter, say, or Darth Vader, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer or somesuch-
What are the characters or worlds of recent vintage that will become to us like Dracula, or The Mummy, or Frankenstein- capable of re-exploration and relevance to a culture many generations removed from their creators?
Off the top of my head I would think James Bond, probably Harry Potter, yes, the Star Wars universe are good candidates. To me this feels like something that is property of a culture rather than an estate or corporation, so all three of these are currently too young.
I bet this has been done before, but I couldn’t find it. Any thoughts?
