The New Jersey Book of the Dead: What did you think?

I just saw this. Interesting, and a little perplexing to me as I normally don’t see live plays, and I tend to stick with American Justice-type linear stuff on television.
What did you think? Overall for me: The shamanic trances didn’t make sense for me–I understand they were Oscar’s delusions/hallucinations, but I’m not sure what purpose they served in the play. Why did the woman who ratted out Diane refer to herself as a “freak” early on? I assumed she was a pre-op transsexual or something, but the reference never played itself out, as far as I could tell.
And what the hell was the phone-sex scene doing in there?
I’d better stop, lest I embarrass myself. Surprisingly, I actually did enjoy it, although it was kind of emotionally taxing (all the arguing between lovers was evocative and sad–the women who played those characters were excellent in those scenes.)
