What are the names of the dogs?
Same as the original , Zeus and Apollo
No, but she did whisper it to herself while providing Magnum a ride - - - and it delivered every bit as much indignation as Hillerman’s.
Yes, in episode 2. And it was good.
I also like that the big fat shrimp dude (never could remember his name) from H5O appeared in episode 2, in McGarrett and Dano’s restaurant! This new Magnum is almost being treated as a spin-off of H5O, which I find delightful.
Loved nuHiggens delivering “Oh my God!” She’s much more active than OG Higgins.
They had nuMagnum try out the Selleckstache in a flashback. It was not a good look and he promptly shaved it off.
The fisherman friend of Nuzo was Apollo Creed, yes? He/they almost held the Da Nang hat in his hands and moved in toward the camera like an old fashioned 3D gimmick. I do believe they are going to respect the original and make as many references as possible. Also, delighted they use Nuzo in flashbacks so the actor gets steady work and the character is more than a typical redshirt (although who knows when he may appear again?) It is obvious he was the lynchpin that created the dynamic and I like the idea of friends being drawn together by the loss of a fallen comrade especially one who did not fall in combat.
I cannot believe how they are using Rick, and there are some very subtle things that many might not notice. I am going to go on a little tribute journey here:
Okay, I know all Marines are riflemen first, but they trusted him to be the sniper? He must be a much better shot that Larry Manetti was, and he must stay current. Sure it is TV, but these risky plans will only work if there is some possibility of success, so Rick has combat chops. What is more, Rick is a badass who disarmed and captured a guy who had the drop on him! It was even believable if you can believe the guy was stupid enough to be balancing his weight on his captive. He even coolly transacts the exchange, his competence is very different from the original Rick who was obviously a small man who was always trying to prove himself but was only effective when the drama required that he deliver. But later in the show nuRick was the goofy clown asking for the high five and being out of step with the others. He is much more than a guy who can get you free beers at the King K Club and a conduit to Ice Pick. Rick’s best moment was with the big man, that little scene had a lot of content and some of it was very subtle.
Some background, LM Rick grew up admiring the old Hollywood tough guys; he made his place as much like Rick’s Café Americana from Casablanca as possible. He even gave patrons free drinks when they commented how much the place reminded them of the movie. He grew up Orville, the nerdy kid who probably played violin and was on the chess team – but he wanted to be Bogie. He wanted to be weary, worn, and world wise; able to sweep Lauren Becall off her feet and score Katherine Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman to boot. Orville Wright was a small Italian kid whose friends called him “Rick” because of his pathetic fascination with Humphrey Bogart, but he took it and wore it as a badge of honor. He eventually grew into the role he wanted for himself, he knew mobsters, he had a supper club (well, the Hawaiian version), he knew stuff the jamokes on the street corner couldn’t fathom. I can prove nuRick is also Italian – he called the very obviously red sauce (probably marinara) the restaurateur was working on “gravy”. To most Americans, gravy is a brown sauce made with meat drippings to put on sliced meat and mashed potatoes, they call tomato based sauces spaghetti sauce, or sauce, or marinara (which is a specific kind of red sauce). Italian Americans have uncles and grandparents who call ‘pasta’ macaroni and gravy. He is probably far enough removed from the old country that he was not forced to play violin as a kid, but he might be a chess player.
Anyway, Rick also showed another important skill in that scene; the ability to find out what is important to someone and to use that information to manipulate the person. Even people you know are going to try to work you, even if you know their hustle—they can still work you. Rick has that, and if you hustle too, you feel taken when you look back and realize you have been worked- - but you can’t help but admire them for being able to pull it off. Most of Rick’s marks never know they are giving up anything because it is so often just information, or a place to park his boat out of sight of satellite cameras for a day, or an air gapped computer with enough software to overthrow a whole government. And he knows people who have these things and either take them for granted—or want a chance to show off how cool they are. NuRick is the best sidekick ever, formable warrior, comic relief, access to everything this side of magical, looks snappy in uniform, pleasant calm demeanor, still looks just like Bill Engvall.
I thought TC with the bat was ridicules, but damn if he wasn’t believable. The producers need to learn the difference between an adventure movie where characters may die and stupid risk is a plus, and a TV show with a regular cast who are going to be alive next week and are not caricatures but real humans. If they are constantly cavalier about life and take foolish risks every episode you cannot identify in any real way- they become fable. Also the villains need to be more than cut outs – be real and do more than serve the plot. TC had some nice moments, I am always glad he is Magnum’s friend, but he kind of sinks into the background sometimes. I expect he will develop further in upcoming episodes
Higgins was a delight, you just have to believe a ninety pound beauty can kick the living shit out of two or three trained combatants, and that terrorists willing to kill and murder would be caught off guard by a lovers spat. They are going to try to tease the: would she let them kill Thomas angle but by the end of the first season they will be so overprotective that will appear absurd. They could try the: it is the lesser of evils” thing but this is Magnum PI (he prefers: private INVESTIGATOR) so they must always go for the best conceivable resolution – the hyper optimistic option. The potential for couple hood will be there, but unless they add a Bernadette and an Amy Farah Fowler for Rick and TC, Higgins must remain remarkably competent eye candy (she prefers SPY candy). Seeing Higgins do high minded art projects and practice yoga do seem true to life to me; an aloof, competent, modern woman who takes her job seriously and does it well, cares about important matters, and excels in the social graces. Dependably stuffy Higgins, but still acquiring her resume of stories that will bore the living shit out of future acquaintances and also sound farfetched and fabricated despite being (at least mostly) true. In a fight, I would rather face old Higgins and all of his family than nuHiggins – but across a candle lit table in a romantic setting, I would rather face Juliet Higgins (in that one strap) than - - - anyone I can think of right now.
I’ll be in my …… oops, wrong universe. (Only possibility of moving nuHiggins out of that romantic setting would be River, and only after a thousand or more romantic dinners.)
I’ve caught the first 2 episodes and I think I like this show. To me the actors don’t have the personality that the originals did, but they aren’t bad.
I like lady Higgins a lot, but what I don’t think I like is they seem to be setting up sexual tension between her and Magnum. I think a little of that goes a long way and I hope they don’t get into a full relationship.
My parents watch the show, so I caught an episode shortly after Christmas.
There wasn’t anything wrong per se and it was entertaining, but there was something missing. I don’t think Jay Hernandez has quite the same sort of charisma that made Selleck’s Magnum so engaging. He’s too serious or something, while Selleck’s Magnum always had a sort of beach bum burnout thing going on, even though he was a real PI and former SEAL/Naval Intelligence officer.
I forget this show’s still on. No one on the board talks about it.
Huge Magnum fan here and have yet to see this…will fix shortly!
They seemed to take a long holiday hiatus. Either that or my DVR is screwing up. It hasn’t harvested a new show in many weeks.
The show is supposed to come back next week.
