I’m slightly addicted to reading the comments on online news articles, despite the fact that they always make me want to weep for humanity, and I’m pretty sure this has been a fairly common slur against Michelle Obama for years in certain circles (i.e., the ones where her name is spelled 0bummer). I’ve always assumed it came from some combination of racism and “well, if you like gay / transgender people so much, you must BE one” playground taunting.
