The next target?

Doesn’t it stand to reason that now that there has been horrible carnage, the terrorists would want to strike at our morale?

As bad as this is to say, wouldn’t the destruction of the Statue of Liberty have been even more of a blow to American spirits because of its important 100-year-old symbolism?

Is it unsound reasoning to assume that Lady Liberty would be a future major target?

I think you’re confusing your symbolism with theirs. Why knock over a big statue when you can crash a hijacked plane into the financial heart of a country and cause untold numbers of casualties?

And it wouldn’t make much sense for the terrorists to strike again so soon, what with heightened states of alert worldwide. I suspect they’d rather quietly enjoy the media coverage of this carnage.

But then I could be quiet wrong…logic and sense as we know it has little in common with the motivation of these ‘people’.

Not wanting to disturb anybody, but follow-on attacks, on a lower level maybe, or on an escalated level, are standard operating procedure which even terrorists adhere to.

Security analysts are highly impressed by the military precision of the attacks. Perpetrators were in-country for months, even more than a year. Avoiding suspicion once in the United States means that they had a sophisticated understanding of how U.S. intelligence works and the discipline to avoid triggering suspicion.

There are also assumptions that the arrests which have been made were too easy and might involve people which were intentionally “burned” or sacrificed by their planners.

Experts note that the relative ease with which the clues have been uncovered and “mistakes” such as holding onto “dirty” credit cards, are inconsistent with the near perfect planning and execution before and during the attack.

It is a safe assumption that these arrests provided a cover for the real planners. Security professionals point out that following the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, the alleged planner of the attack, flew from New York to Pakistan the day of the explosion, leaving at least two accomplices behind which attracted attention by asking for a refund for the van etc.

This does not at all mean it’s over. The cell structure could consist of independent operatives who perform their “mission” when activated. The country needs to be extremely vigilant. Yesterday evening, another hijack attempt on AA 133 was thwarted before take-off. We are at war with terrorism, and war entails counter-attacks.

There are numerous inviting targets, such as as nuclear power stations, government facilities and military bases, chemical plants and refineries. A LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker has the explosive yield of a small nuclear device. This fact has been known for more than 20 years.

So many assumptions, so little time…
