The Night Of (new HBO show)

None of those defensive arguments (Duane Reed, squirrel blood, creepy hearse driver) would come up in the prosecution’s case. We haven’t seen the defense’s case yet. I expect them to bring up Duane Reed then.

Totally agreed that it was jarring and annoying that they hammered home the importance of jury selection then completely skipped voir dire.

I also think the powder is a red herring, but not because the cat magically healed him. The prednisone shot (or was it pills?) the real doctor gave him cleared it right up, as prednisone shots (and pills, and topical creams) do in real life.

The problem with corticosteroids is that they aren’t sustainable. You can’t just keep using them for years on end. They’ll clear up a reaction, but unless you change something in how you live you’ll just keep getting outbreaks. Back before I changed my life to prevent eczema outbreaks, my dermatologist wouldn’t give me a prednisone shot more frequently than once per 18 months, and she continually warned me about the topical steroid creams she was prescribing because repeated use weakens/thins the skin.

Cats don’t magically cure eczema.

When Chandra opened the door, they both recognized each other and it became an extremely awkward situation. It’s no surprise that he left out of embarrassment. I think the scene right before or after shows Naz’s mother scrubbing floors, thus showing the situation his parents are in now.

<sigh…> Looks like everyone’s going to end up with a life they didn’t plan on.

OK, now Nas is an accessory to a murder. Seems like one of the strongest arguments the defense has is that there were other credible perps that Box did not even interview, much less pursue. Very sloppy.

I have a feeling that even if he’s acquitted, his new life is going to follow him outside of prison. But maybe that will allow him to support his family!

It’s frustrating. I thought the inhaler would be a bigger plot point, not because of mishandling of evidence, but because it is practically the only thing at the crime scene without blood on it. They go on and on about chain of evidence and ignore the pristine condition of the inhaler.

The stab in Andrea’s hand. We get a celebrity examiner on the stand to describe skin cells in a cutting board, but has anybody ever asked Naz about (or has he ever mentioned?) the mumblety peg episode?

The knife. Doesn’t it seem strange to anybody that a knife that’s been plunged to the hilt repeatedly into a victim only has a couple of blood splotches on it? Nope, but we get 5 minutes of drill bits and questions not yet asked.

Great! Duane Reade and Creepy Hearse Guy get a shout out. And then - nothing. Don’t you think that if you bring these guys up, it might be a good idea to grill them on the stand, or at least explain to the jury why they matter? Might make Box seem less than thorough, but it doesn’t really do much to paint them as possible suspects.

Probably because Stone has a tunnel vision fixation on Creepy Gold Digging Step Dad.

If I were HBO, I’d be planning a sequel - The Appeal Of.

He’s surviving in a hostile environment; better to be a friend of the throat slitter than to end up bleeding out in front of Judge Judy.

He has a future in the outside world as the husband of an attorney, it would seem.

What was that?

That kiss came out of nowhere… didn’t it?

It was impulsive and passionate. I had to kiss my wife right afterwards! Imagine if they had had sex! Who knows what I would have done last night…

I do remember wondering if something romantic would happen between Naz and the attorney. I really didn’t expect it though. She seems far too level-headed.

I have no idea which way the verdict will go. At this point it doesn’t seem to matter.

Well, not really. She explained in a previous episode that she just broke up with someone, so in that respect she’s vulnerable, emotion-wise. (add in that she’s so focused on this huge trial right now, that when she saw an opportunity for any affection, she went for it.) And as for Naz, considering what and where he’s been in the past few weeks…

Yeah, I was just commenting on how the system is turning him into what they are accusing him of being.

There are a few steps remaining between the kiss we saw and marriage vows.

Is there just one episode left? Seems like a lot to wrap up. I keep imagining James Gandolfini in the Stone role. It would have been great, but Turturro is great as well.

I’d like to see step dad gym rat hold that bar down on Tony Soprano’s neck

But yeah, one episode. Naz’s own mother thinks he’s guilty.

I wonder if Adderall-buying college friend will get a visit from a guy carrying a ball-peen hammer?

Yes, just one episode left. I suspect it will be more than 60 minutes.

With the way it kept jump cutting to his previous hook-up, I was expecting him to wake up from a wet dream. When it turned out to be actually happening I was surprised.

Yes, but it’s 2 hours. (I think.)

My on-screen guide says 1:45.

ETA: Good thing this isn’t a a GoT thread, as that might be considered a spoiler.

I have a stinking feeling, that we’re not going to see this thing solved like a Law & Order episode. I think we’re going to see if he is convicted or acquitted, and then the viewer will have to ponder whether or not they agree with the verdict.

There are a lot of things I could quibble about with the most recent episode. But I did appreciate the in-your-face irony of Naz being unable to fend off a full-blown trial on his guilt or innocence re Andrea’s murder because of a rush to judgment, but that he is unlikely to face any charges for Petey’s murder in which he did in fact materially participate. Tons of misguided “proof” as to the former. Virtually none as to the latter, except perhaps direct testimony from Freddy… and that’s unlikely from every scenario that I can imagine. Yet he will suffer judgment in only one of these situations.

Predictions: Unlikely to be Creepy Hearse Guy. He’s a True Believer, and creepy for sure – but he has a strict moral code, so I just don’t see it. Also, there’s no evidence of a hearse hanging around Andrea’s neighborhood in the night. One of those things that would be sort of conspicuous to eye witnesses.

Unlikely to be Creepy Gold Digging Step Dad… too obvious. He certainly stands to profit from her death, but in the absence of Naz, he would also be the most likely suspect. He didn’t know anything about Naz being with Andrea that night, so his ability to “pin” the murder on someone else is a moot point. How lucky for him if it worked out that way by happenstance!

That leaves Duane Read. He’s the only one so far who knew Naz was going to be there and the probable reason for his presence. That look he gave Naz in Episode One was pure, murderous hate. Jealousy?

And now there’s a second body that even Box says is “another Andrea.” Hmmmm. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Whatever the ending, I don’t think it’s going to end well for Naz, whether inside or out.

Oh, my thoughts on the kiss: No one in this drama is coming across nearly as nice as they would want society at large to believe. I don’t think Chandra is any exception. Her comment of, “I’ll drink anything,” after being rattled by Creepy Hearse Guy, coupled with her slamming back the two with Stone at the bar makes me wonder if her life is as in control as she wants us to think. Her comment about having just broken up with her boyfriend seemed more like a hasty, made-up excuse to me to explain her drinking than anything based on the truth. As for the kiss and the flashbacks, I wasn’t sure if the flashbacks were Naz’s or Chandra’s. It might have been a little thrill for her to share a kiss with a man so potentially dangerous. Call me cynical.

I was watching the show late at night, so I’m not sure if I’m remembering wrong but, there was another crime scene briefly showed in the episode, right? Does Box suggests that there were similarities to Naz’s case?

Edit: Ok, so it was there, and the killer may have struck again! Shit, if the defense can find the details of this other murder, could they bring it up at trial?

Petey slit his wrists in the john, didn’t he?

I’m sorry; you’re right. Whoever the other guy is in Freddy’s sphere. Not-Petey. The murder victim.
