The (not very) Good Doctor

If there is another thread on this show I apologize, didn’t see one. I have seen the show twice and found it terrible. There isn’t a single likable character on the show - the conceit is that the main character is a high functioning autistic, which brings some challenges as he’s also a surgery resident. He pushes people away s by being blunt and tactless, then wins over his reluctant patients by catching errors his back-biting, nasty co-workers miss. Realistic medicine is never a feature of medical dramas, but the good doctor takes this to ridiculous extremes.

Want to cool down a liver on the way to being transplanted? Cover it in slushy from a 7-11, then perform “surgery” on it along the highway because you’ve diagnosed a clot in it since it is firm to the touch.

And, it is the highest rated new drama this season - so obviously there are a lot of folks who eat it up. Do not get it.

What flavor slushy?

It’s from the same guy who gave us Dr. Gregory House. ISTM we now have Doc House with a side of Doc Howser.

I watched the first couple of episodes. Yes, it’s awful. But most network dramas are awful. (BTW, it’s not an original concept, but instead is an adaption of a Korean drama series.)

I watched the first two episodes with my wife. The first episode I found half-interesting about how the kid saw stuff, etc. By the second episode, they got away from things like the sensory stimulation (that they highlighted at the airport, but is missing in a hospital?) and more on the rest of the cast, all of whom I have zero interest in. Plus I started to find some of the ASD stuff from the doctor improbable – he went through however many years of college and then med school and never encountered sarcasm until he reached this hospital? I get that they wanted to highlight “He has autism and these are some of the challenges” aspect but it felt as though he just dropped onto Earth a week ago.

Also, I was done with the “Flying images from hand-drawn medical texts” thing within an hour.

I agree! I thought this would be a very entertaining series. I loved Freddie Highmore & Antonia Thomas in previous shows, but I don’t like him & she is wasted here. He comes off more arrogant than autistic, except that he won’t look anyone in the eye & ignores questions. I think I’m giving up on this one.

lol I bet the K-drama version is better acted written and still unintentionally hilarious …

Blue.

StG

We watched the first couple of episodes, too. I was an avid “House” fan for the first few years it was on, but as with any formula-laden series, I eventually lost interest. I can see myself doing the same here.

It’s not the best new show out there but it’s certainly not the worst.

Wait, this isn’t a Dr. Who thread?

Onion.

If you like the lead actor - watch the ‘Bates Motel’ Series -

I’ve only seen commercials, but isn’t Richard Schiff in the cast? I’m disappointed he would sign up for that kind of dreck.

Richard Schiff plays the hospital president, who pushed through the idea of hiring this kid, despite his autism. I fully expect an episode in which Schiff’s character is critically ill and only the kid’s expertise is able to save him, although I expect to have given up on the show before then.

Based on the ads, I wasn’t going to watch this, and I’m glad I didn’t miss much. Everyone’s comments just reinforce that my initial impressions were somewhat accurate.

I have a bit of a problem with the use of a “handicap” as a superpower - he is such a good doctor BECAUSE he is autistic! It would be just as bad a storyline where - he is a serial killer BECAUSE he is autistic! And we know that wouldn’t fly. Kinda like how we now know (most of us, anyhow) it’s not appropriate to use positive racial stereotyping, just like it’s not acceptable to use negative racial stereotyping.

The casting of the lead made my eyes roll when I saw the ads. Awww, look at him, he’s such a sweetie, and AWWWWW, he’s autistic! How can you not just want to hug his sweet widdle sweetnesss?

And then there is Toby as the stern authority figure (hey, don’t begrudge Schiff, actors need to work). I figure they hired him in part to draw in the liberal costal elite viewers who might otherwise give this a pass.

Ok, I’m done trashing it, carry on.

Sounds like Scorpion, but just a doctor.

I hate watch Scorpion. The situations are ridiculous and I hate the lead guy. But I like the other characters and how they interact. I can’t stop.

I think it was blue so maybe blueberries ? I am disappointed in the show , I was hoping I had a new show to watch yeah is not a very good doctor . I am surprise it getting good reviews .

There’s a BBC series called The Tunnel that started out great and has a great premise - it has Stannis Baratheon and the actress from In Bruges investigating a body found in the Chunnel, right on the country borders - but she plays an Aspergerian character who keeps voicing her interest in others’ behaviors, as though she spent her first 30 years in a broom closet. So annoying.

Is this show tied into that pseudoscientific “Indigo/Chrystal/Rainbow Children” crap?

I liked that series. Yes, she was shown as having something like autism or Asperger’s but I thought it worked well. (And actually The Tunnel is based on a Scandinavian series called The Bridge, and, although I never saw it, the female detective there had a similar personality.)
