If you watch the longer video I linked to above, you can see the guy with the helmet-cam waving people onward, encouraging them to catch up to the SUV. Couldn’t they all be charged with conspiracy and possibly prosecuted under RICO statutes?
As a motorcycle rider for over 30 years, this sickens me. If indeed the car hit, tapped, or bumped a bike or rider, then responsible adult behavior dictates 2 parties solve the problem or call the police. Guy in the car is at fault and wants to leave? Fine. Park a bike in front of him, step away, get his tag and call the cops.
Ok then. This was not the only group. They were on the Eastside too at the same time. The NYPD were able to stop several groups. There were arrests, bike seizures and multiple citations. But when someone’s face is covered and no plate is visible I would like to know how you propose going after someone. They were able to get many. But unsurprisingly many on fast nimble motorcycles were able to get away.
Speeding driver:“Officer why did you stop me? All the other cars were going the same speed!”
Officer: “You ever go fishing?”
Speeding driver: “Yes but I don’t see…”
Officer: “Ever catch all of the fish?”
Gee whizzers, I think there is a difference between “not much we can do” and “we caught a bunch of them.” I guess there is something they can do, isn’t there?
I think you are confused by your own OP. In the article you posted the “can’t do much” quote you mention came from the blogger not the NYPD. Its your own OP I thought you read it.
The NYPD got prior intelligence that this event was happening. They set up checkpoints around the city. They stopped many of them. Its in your linked article. But you then later say “I don’t mean chasing them, that often gets innocents killed, but there must be something they can do besides, “oh well.”” There was other things they can do and did. Which you helpfully provided the information for. However there probably isn’t a lot they can do about those involved in the SUV incident unless someone talks.
The info I had in the OP was that this apparently happens all the time and there is nothing much the cops can do about it. Later there is more info and the cops are rounding these guys up. Do you not have a sense of the passage of time? Maybe I got more information at a later time? Maybe?
With a small child strapped in, in the back seat? A gun owner who carries ought to expect his attackers to be at least as well armed, and a gun battle on the highway with bullets flying through the car would be a very bad idea, and even worse when trapped on a blocked surface street.
Yeah, this particular time they impounded a bunch of bikes. The blog also said there isn’t much they can do, which I took to mean that besides this one well-videoed incident, this happens all the time and there isn’t much they can do. So?
Honestly, in that position, I can’t imagine any other response. Maybe hindsight shows it differently, but in the moment, an overwhelming show of force would be the only defense left. Instinct and fear would take over, and people would be dropping like flies. Nobody there was in a clear state of mind, and nobody can say that they would have acted in a different way if they were in the same emotional state as the car driver. Maybe they can say they wouldn’t have been so fearful, but that’s a different point.
Me, if driven to that kind of fear for my life/family’s life, and I had a gun? assuming a 9 round clip, we’d have 4 dead bikers and one more at least injured. Two shots to center mass almost guarantees your continued safety. At least the video would be there to support your self defense claims. Without it, jailtime and murder charges would likely follow.
But at least your family would be safe. Once the bikers started dropping, I can’t imagine that any more would continue to press on.
