Started it last night. Halfway through the first episode I thought it was kinda dumb, but I’d watch the rest of the episode. It finally got a bit interesting after the opening credits*, but still kinda dumb. The second episode autostarted before I could make my lazy ass change it so I ended watching the second one too. The second one was better, but I’m still giving it a solid meh+. I’ll probably keep watching tonight because I really really hate trying to decide on something else to watch.
*Really? 50 minutes to get to opening credits? I kinda laughed, but I’m not sure I was supposed to. Mainly because it reminded me of another movie that did that and it WAS funny (if you like Japanese alien fungus zombie head exploding blood spray movies). Go watch Helldriver.
After the first episode, I’m seriously disappointed so far. I feel like the only tension/suspense for the viewer is the fact that we’re not being told anything. I will probably come back to it later, but I’ll definitely finish Luke Cage first.
We are steadily watching this (as predicted, hubby likes it). I feel like I’m having my brain extracted through my ears. It’s…just…so…slow. I manage to refrain from having a conniption by multi-tasking while it’s on.
I think the plot is ridiculous - Wayward Pines ridiculous. I liked WP more though. The characters seemed a little more alive. It was at least entertaining in its stupidity.
Watched ep3 and 4 last night. I’m not sure if it is getting better or not. Just when I think it might be, something happens and I groan and/or roll my eyes. I’ll still probably finish the series though, again, because I am too lazy to look for something else.
I’m about five episodes in so far. I’ve kind of enjoyed what I’ve seen so far, and might even be willing to suspend my disbelief more than usual given that some woo seems inevitable at this point. But I’m at red alert, ready and half expecting to be punched in the face by an inept and stupid TV writer yelling “Ha! Wasted your time!”.
Finished it last night and enjoyed it very much. If you are thinking of stopping after a few episodes, I’d encourage you to continue.
I haven’t seen Brit Marling in anything else so can’t comment on that, but I thought as said above that all the cast were excellent. Great to see the ultra hot Borg Queen growing old beautifully.
I’ll say more later about the content and themes tonight, but it was always compelling - even when I was thinking ‘no way’…
I liked the characters a lot. Their stories, their interactions. Even the bully who I almost turned off the show early on for, grew on me in the end.
I don’t know that the ending was well executed though. It was almost Deus ex Machina in in it’s appearance, like they didn’t know how to pull the narrative together so they plopped down whatever came to mind first. There certainly wasn’t any foreshadowing, unless I missed something.
Also:
That FBI guy (loved him in “the Night Of”!) what was he doing in Prairie’s house? If there’s a season 2, I think he’s going to play a bigger role.
Did not care for the how it wrapped up. Was moderately intrigued through 6.5 episodes.
Best part of it ended up being the awareness of how binging is changing consumption to put the opening titles 50 minutes into the first episode. When really it was just an 8 hour episode of TV, putting the titles the equivalent of 6 minutes into an hour episode was about right. Little long for a cold open but not excessive.
This is the first thing I’ve binged in a while on Netflix and for this show it only gave about 5 seconds before automatically starting the next episode. I’m used to it being something like 20 seconds. Have they globally changed that or was that a ploy just for The OA?
On reflection I felt it was good, maybe not very good, but good enough to entertain me. I thought the denoument was perhaps the whole point; - art v tyranny, culture v ignorance, enlightenment v blinkers. It worked for me and would definitely look forward to a second season. I don’t know if this is evidence of the liberal elite at it again!
I think Stranger Things was better - but I might have enjoyed this more as it made me think more. Maybe I’m being perverse there.
My only real eye-roll moment was that Prarie’s scars were said to have been described by a nurse as ‘hard to look at’. Perhaps it was a trainee nurse’s first day. Dancing to open time portal’s was far more believable.
