The obligatory "Incredibles" thread!

Same here. Of course, they WERE able to show EIGHT COMMERCIALS before the trailers began.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was directly lifted. The shots look too close to be anything but deliberate. Not that that’s a bad thing, mind.

Did anyone catch this?

Mirage’s business card had an 866 number on it. Anyone catch it, and if you did, have you called it?

Also,
the chase scene definitely was from Jedi. Other homages I noticed:

 • Gazerbeam was Cyclops. Definitely.

 • Frozone traveled a lot like Iceman did in the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon.
What did you guys think of the Cars trailer? Am I the only one that thinks it’s going to be funny?

Another viewer who loved it. Too many things to mention that were great, so I’ll limit myself to the following: The hair and cloth got it’s own separate animation credits, deservedly so. The exact right balance of suspension of disbelief with reality. Such as: 1. Elastigirl (Woman?) warning her two children that the bad guys will kill them if they get caught. 2.Incredible and Elastigirl bickering about freeway exits. Oh, and yes, Elastigirl goes straight to the top of the MILF list. Plus she can fight with the best of them! And I’ll have to buy the DVD just to look at all the guests in the wedding pews.

At this point I would go see a movie about the secret underground world of living, talking pieces of poo as long as it was Pixar animated.

Oddly enough, we just saw a commercial for Pringles with a “The Incredible’s” tie-in… and the kid on the commercial said “Showtime” twice, and it was imprinted on one of the potato chips.

Curiouser and curiouser…

The SO and I went to see this last night. We both agreed, it was good, but it wasn’t Pixar’s best. I enjoyed Finding Nemo and both of the Toy Story movies better. Not something I’d rave about to friends, but definitely good.

I saw it today with a friend (also gay) and when Edna Mode came on screen, we both turned to each other and said, "OMG, it’s Edith Head!" (the late multi-Oscar-winning costume designer).

NO CAPES!

Oh. That’s not how Iceman normally travels in the comics and stuff? That’s how he did it in the Sega game…

gobear, I don’t know whether to be miffed you said it first, or delighted somebody else noticed!

According to Brad Bird, he’s got no plans for a sequel, and won’t do one unless it’s a damn good script. Bravo to artistic integrity!

He says it at least twice, IIRC – it’s his signature “Time to prod buttock” quote, said in a husky macho whisper. My four-year-old keyed in on it as well.

And I thought the “Jedi chase scene” blew the snot out of anything Lucas did.

Nobody else can explain what Kronos was about?

I think this nails it

Saw it this afternoon whilst surrounded by millions of kids in a large theater, and was completely captivated. Best, IMO, since the Pixar’s two Toy Story films, but my opinion is colored somewhat because a large part of my enjoyment involved picking out all the references to other movies, of which there are many. This is what I think, to a certain extent, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow aspired to but unfortunately didn’t quite achieve. Loved it for the truly spectacular animation and (for me, at least) hilarious, clever dialogue. The plot certainly WAS derivative (think True Lies meets Fantastic Four meets Jonny Quest meets You Only Live Twice), but in a fun way.

Others have mentioned favorite high points; I’ll just add that I particularly enjoyed the overall James Bond ambiance of the island lair and the top-notch musical score, which seemed to capture perfectly the the spirit of the great John Barry (composer of many of the best-remembered Bond themes, as well as the memorable score for Zulu). As far as the characters are concerned, the makers managed a family dynamic that seemed spot-on; I especially enjoyed the scenes at home early in the film, especially the bit where Mr. Incredible has the greatest trouble simply closing his car door, and the sequence where what begins as typical family bickering over dinner rapidly turns into a realistic, super-power augmented chaos.

One warning: if your child is under five, think seriously about whether they can handle the action and noise; several kids in the audience lost it completely during some of the more intense scenes, particularly when weapons were being fired.

Anybody else think the HMO boss was the spitting image of Stephen King?

I saw a lot of William H. Macy in the guy.

I recognized her as a famous person, but didn’t know the name.

However, at least I did better than the CNN reviewer:

"Edna is an unlikely combination of Coco Chanel, Yoko Ono and George Patton. "

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/11/05/review.incredibles/index.html

The license plate on the police car involved in the chase early in the movie was KR 54 – obviously a reference to “Car 54, Where Are You?”

That made me pay attention to the licenses on Mr. Incredible’s cars later in the movie, but I didn’t get the jokes, if there were any. Did anyone else?

Re: Of Titans and metaphors

My problem with the “Titan” explanation for “kronos” is simply that it still feels like a non sequiter, plot-wise. Why was the word etched in the cave wall at all, except as a plot contrivance for Mr. Incredible to use it later at the computer? It’s like watching Star Wars where R2-D2 gives Luke the Death Star plans on a random whim…

I want to check out the tracks for the full score; the trailers were cut with the Propellerheads’ “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” which IMO was a perfect fit; I don’t recall getting the same kind of big-band brass music from the movie score, but I might have just missed those moments.

Wusses. Guess their parents must’ve tightly restricted their home cartoon viewing…

To be sure, it’s an interesting take on superheroes for someone who doesn’t read comics. Everything you mentioned was done in WATCHMEN.

Pizzabrat: Frozone fit my idea of how Iceman would move perfectly. What comics are you thinking of? Check out anything pre-1990 (I gave up after that).

For everyone who wonders about Jack Jack fitting into the FF thing: Little kid, can’t communicate, apparently random and extra-powerful powers: it’s Frankin Richards!

Actually, I do read comics, including the Watchmen. IIRC, Watchmen was not a laugh riot.

Also, there is the continuing threat of a Watchmen movie. I don’t think they’ll be able to pull it off.
