The Office -- the end

Over the last two nights the BBC have broadcast the last ever episodes of The Office in the form of two one hour Christmas Specials. If it comes your way you have to see what another message board has described as the best TV of all year. The first episode is slightly weaker but still full of hilarious moments. Look out for Brent’s pop video and the Blind Date scene. But it is the second episode, which is the winner. It is full of funny and cringe-making moments that tie up some loose ends. Also be prepared to shed some tears over two of the characters and I am pleased to say that even David gets to regain his dignity. A winning programme going out on a high.

You say he gets to regain his dignity. I never saw any. Unfortunately although the two series were on the ABC pay TV has grabbed this so God knows when I’ll ever see it.

I shed a tear for Tim and Dawn.

I also shed a tear for that poor woman that liked Brent.

For anyone who cannot get to see the programmes but would like to know what happened this review tells all . ( one big spoiler of course ) :-

Easily one of my all-time favourite series. And agreed about the ending, it’s the first time “Bluto” Brent says something honest and it brings a tear to my eye.

Has anyone checked out Ricky Gervais’ new DVD, Ricky Gervais Live - Animals?

I couldn’t decide weither to be pleased or disappointed - things turned out well for them?!

As David was seeing his date away, I said almost aloud “What stupid embarrasing thing is he going to do?”

I’m glad Brent told Finchy to fuck off, that was regaining at least some sense of dignity.

I can’t believe it actually made me cry. Nothing on tv makes me cry, ever. I missed the very end of the second, my video tape ran out right after Tim and Dawn walked out of the room. Did anything else happen?

David’s new girlfriend said she wanted to go out with him again. He has found a soulmate at last

I saw that bit, she’s mad. So i didn’t miss anything worth mentioning? It must have been near the end of the program.

Had anyone heard if BBC America has any plans to air it?

Brilliant wasn’t it?

I like the fact that David got the girl - I think the idea is that when the camera isn’t on him he’s actually quite a nice bloke.

“I was waiting for a blind date and I was scared it was you”

They’ll probably get to it eventually. I believe they just started airing second season episodes a couple months ago.

I’ve seen most of the first season, and consider it fairly amusing. Perhaps I’d like it more if I could actually understand most of what the people on the show are saying, but I’ve never been good at deciphering some British accents (e.g. the brothers from Oasis). I think I’ll put the closed-captioning on next time I watch it.

BBC America aired the last episode of season two last night…I can’t wait until we get to see the Christmas specials!

Finchy is a wanker it was good to see him silenced.

I agree - the bit with Finchy was great. It was about time he was told where to go.

Two bits of news for UK Dopers. You can see both episodes again over on BBC3. Times are :-
04/01/04 - 22:00 - both episodes
05/01/04 - 23:00 - episode 1
06/01/04 - 23:00 - episode 2

Also ( according to the People ) the BBC are to release Brent’s single as featured in his pop video. I wonder if it will sell more that 146 copies?

I cried a bucket when Dawn came back which both my girlfriend and I thought very odd. It just seemed so amazing that Tim eventually got his girl, you always wanted him to, it just seemed so right and beautiful.

Yes that is quite odd mate.

Dawns boyfriend was pretty funny he’s such a twat it’s unreal.

Hi Dawne. You didn’t miss anything important.

The next scene was later as the office party was evidently winding down. We saw a couple of general end-of-party shots, clumsily-formed couples slow-dancing etc.

Next was a scene where everyone had gathered together so that one of the girls could take snapshots of them all in end-of-party mood. After the first photo, David asked if the girl taking the photos could do one more “without Neil” - so David moved in to the centre and Neil removed himself - and she took a photo of Brent and the regulars from what he regarded as ‘his’ office crew. David was being his usual ‘funny’ self during this, doing a Frank Spencer voice, but for this one scene at least the others were seen to actually find him funny and as if welcoming his ‘quips’. Tim and Dawn were in this line-up, still arm in arm, but there was no special mention made of it. We got the sense that everyone had by this stage got used to the Tim/Dawn news, so it was no longer a special focus.

There was a final snippet of talking head interview with Brent in which he pontificated about the need for three things in life - good job, good relationship, and to Make A Difference, and he said the difference he wanted to be remembered for was that he made everyone he met smile. Then he turned to whoever was operating the camera and said ‘Have you got enough now?’ and that was all.
