She asked me out first, to a ROTC function. We had known each other through church functions before, and I thought she was attractive, so I jumped at the chance.
This woman had character. She wasn’t afraid to try new things, had a wit that was amazing, and was in great physical condition. We started spending more time together, and I was amazed.
Then one day, she gave me the warning. In short, she said she wouldn’t make a good lover because she was recently raped, and had understandably had difficulties being intimate.
I thought I was doing the best thing for her by backing off and letting her go. Now, I see that it was the wrong response. I especially cringe when I think of how she might have interpreted it.
I tried to get in touch with her again, but she’s long gone. I swore since then to never again let go of something so wonderful.
Bitter sweet memories…
