The only SDMB subscription thread you need

I really think this is a problem with perception. I wish I had the access to do Admin Searches, but I believe that the situation actually is that 90%-95% of the posts are made by people who through one mechanism or another signed up to pay, and that’s why it appears that only Charter Members are talking.

Plus, this place has a long history. It changed when it left AOL, it changed when several other major events happened, and it will continue to change. All places do.

I never understand this concern although I appreciate the feeling behind it. The SDMB thrived very happily when it had far fewer Members in 1999, 2000, 2001…going back to those levels of active Members will in no way make it die. My place does very well with 100-140 active Members; the SDMB can do very well with the 2000+ that signed up, and whoever wants to join on in.

Well, I finally gave in and subscribed. After being here for ~4 years, I figure I owe the board to at least try out a year’s subscription, and I can always bail later if the board starts deteriorating (which I hope not).

I still feel that the price of $14.95 should be lowered drastically… we need to welcome newbies rather than scare them off. Oh well…

Yes, and apparently you’re both reading comprehension impaired. I have not seen that there is a trend for Charter Members to ONLY respond to Charter members- except that indeed certain posters generally only respond to a select list (and they always have, so “Charter member” or no means nothing to them).

No one is checking whether or not your name has “Charter member” written under it before they “deign” to read or respond to your post. So, StinkFishPot is a whining moron who is creating a paranoid complex becuase “I am poor and no one listens to poor little old me”, and since you couldn’t figure out the satire in my post- laden with smileys- you join him in the “dudes who think S.A.T. is the past tense of Sit” club.

Ok. It seems that a few people have misinterpreted the meaning of my last note. I’ll make another attempt to clear up any misunderstandings.

In retrospect, it seems I may have been a bit ambiguous. When I said that “Charter Members” are talking to “Charter Members”, it was in reference to threads like these. I said that I have/had read most of these threads, so that’s where I’ve seen the behavior. (I apologize if this was confusing. I posted early this morning, so sleep was lacking. I hit the submit button, so I’ll take the hit.) Obviously, as people join in this next month, they will be “Charter Members” (I think), so in other threads it wouldn’t be surprising as membership rises. But when “Charter Members” talk to “Charter Members” in threads like this, again acting as if they are superior by joining a message board, while thinking that those that don’t are “cheap bastards”, “whining morons”, or worse, it leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. This community is better than that… at least it should be.

I’m neither whining or a moron. I’ve not asked for and will not accept sponsorship. Libertarian and others that have contacted me via email, thank you for the offers. However, I’d rather your generosity go to someone in need. And again, for those of you who have asked, I have no problem paying for things on the internet, so I have no problem with what the Reader has done.

I suppose I could have chosen not to respond to this thread and just gone away, but I thought it might be worthwhile for folks to read why someone may not be leaping at the opportunity to join. At the end of the day, this thread will close, the board will go on, and so will I. Unlike many, I do not believe the board will be doomed. It will change for sure, but I don’t see it shutting its doors anytime soon. But in the spirit of “fighting ignorance” (whether or not it’s the ignorance you want to fight at the moment), I chose to post to supply a perspective.

I, however, do consider this place to be a great corner of the internet, where people from all over the globe can add to the knowledge to those looking to learn. About anything! I worry that restricting membership to those that pay will reduce the pool of brains to pick from, reducing the overall mission of this board. Time will tell. And not allowing anyone to search will not only cause redundant posts, but will keep new folks from learning the power of this board… the compiled knowledge made up of years of questions, answers, debates and opinions of some fascinating people.

I will leave with a thank you to all of you who have made me think, given me an answer, a new perspective, or made me laugh. The only common thread here is the english language. Other than that, I’ve learned something from people that I probably would have never interacted with ever were it not for this board.

Well, I just paid and did so happily. It was the first time I’d ever paid for a message board membership, but this is no ordinary membership. At SDMB, I can shoot the breeze on Thursday nights with fellow Survivor junkies and critique young singers with other American Idol viewers. And if I have a question that I can’t Google an answer to, I always get more than one intelligent and factual response in a matter of minutes. That’s worth the $7.50 I’ll pay for renewals and definitely the $4.95 I just shelled out.

I’m not wealthy, but five bucks is not a lot of money. I spend that much on a McDonald’s value meal that might taste like crap when I get home to eat it, or a magazine that might be a boring issue once I read it. Here I know I’ll be entertained every time I check the board.

If someone honestly can’t afford five bucks between now and April 21, I understand because there was a time when I couldn’t spare a dime, let alone five dollars, so I’m going to check the sponsorship list and buy someone a membership, but for the people who have the money and want to make some statement against paying for anything online, well…I just don’t get it. Either pay and stay or go, but so far none of those people has given a decent explanation of why it’s so wrong for SDMB to charge, IMHO.

I made some people pissed off in another thread. Sorry if I did, but I have to agree.

It’s a bummer, but nothing in life is free. And yeah, $4.95 isn’t much for me and I understand it may be for others. I’d be willing to pay for another person (of course I can’t pay for everyone  )

A board of this size and the wealth of knowledge stored here must cost BIG bucks to run. I’m sorry to see people like SFP go, but I just guess there are people who think it’s worth it and some who don’t.

Can’t please everyone. :frowning:

Ok, let me try to help you out once more, as obviously 6 and Maureen were unable to do so earlier.

Neither 6 or myself ever said we weren’t intending to pay to post here. As a matta of fact, if you can find that I EVER said such a thing, I will pay for you to post here for the rest of your life. The fact that we hadn’t done so at the same time as you, does not make us any less worthy of posting here as yourself. We are both intending to subscribe…and as for myself, I did so shortly after your ridiculous comments. See, two weeks ago my credit card was stolen, and I had to cancel it, and have my bank send me a new one. Which they did, and which I used this morning to pay for my membership. But even if I hadn’t paid to post here yet, you have no right whatsoever to suggest that we don’t have a right to be here if we haven’t paid our membership fees as you have.

People with your mindset will keep guests from becoming members.

It was never about paying to post, lolababy. It was about starting specific types of threads, and if those threads would be allowed for paying members. Threads which, despite your posts in the “Hugs” thread, you say you never enter or bother to read, as they are a waste of bandwidth and SPAM.
Oh, and I never called you elitist. I called you condescending and self righteous. If you’re going to accuse me of insulting you, at least get the insult right. Taking your last unnecessary post to that thread into consideration, add kissass to that while you’re at it.

I first read about this subscription thing a few days ago, and wasn’t going to bother, as I thought paypal was the only option - I live in Ireland, and have had a bad experience of ‘paypal’ in the past.

I’m mostly a lurker anyhow - but someone mentioned being able to pay by debit card today - so now I’ve just upgraded myself <oh, joy!!> from lurker to charter member, just by pushing a button.

Thank you so much for providing an alternative to the dreaded ‘paypal’ !! Amazing the number of people who just won’t use that sh***y service.

I didn’t want to pay just yet, but I did it just for you Lola. You fucking elitist snob! Now that i have paid my 5 bucks, my opinion matters… just as much as YOUR skewed view on the world according to the Dope. If everyone had your attitude, NO Guest would ever pay the money to join! Oh, “I run a board… nothing is free…” Blah Blah fucking Blah. If your little board had a 50th of the traffic of this one, I MIGHT take you seriously. As it is… you are a little fly… something I swat off my shoulder… go back to your LITTLE world where you are a “big” fish in a little pond. Pffffft. Asshole!

Wow, I almost never even read The BBQ Pit. Damn it’s different from the rest of the board! It’s like the SDMB’s nasty evil twin from a parallel universe!

I’m not going to argue with you, dude. Nothing is free. You may not like it, but it isn’t. You can blah fucking blah that up your ass.

I have always felt if you’re not going to vote, don’t complain. And you never considered my analogy about staying in someone’s house, rent-free.

You can call me whatever names you like, but what it comes down to, is that they got rid of those threads. Which makes me happy. See?

P.S. Thanks for paying. If I pissed you off into paying then at least I pissed you off into paying before April21st. You saved 10 dollars!

Maureen: if they close that hugs thread, so be it. Threads get closed daily. I get real hugs daily. shrugs

Well, I know it sounds stupid, but I just don’t have 5 dollars to spare. Which is shit, bcause I really enjoyed by time here on the boards.

I’ll miss all you guys.

If I ever get 14.95 I’ll be here - with bells on.

See you all.

Peace out.

I’m considering biting the bullet and getting a PayPal account purely for subscription purposes. If I use it to subscribe, will there be any record of my name with the CR? Also, would using a credit card with PayPal avoid some of the horror stories I’ve heard about it?

As mentioned before there are threads in ATMB where people can help you out if you want to stick around, hopefully you will.

Why use a CC with paypal? Just use it directly.

As far as charter members only talking amongst themselves, isn’t anyone who pays right now a charter member?

Stink Fish pot good luck, sorry to see you go.

I might check it out. Couldn’t they just let my fee slide for a few months ? At least keep it at 5.00 until I manage to get it together?

Anyway. Thanks All.

I meant, using a CC to establish money for a PayPal account. And I was thinking about not using a CC directly because of various horror stories about people being basically stalked because someone connected their RL name with this board. Take a look at the longer closed threads here to see what I mean.

I love this message board…

Whats $4.95…Hell, I just paid that much for a spicy chicken sammich at WENDYS

You know, for a place that claims to be set up to fight ignorance, there’s quite a lot of it on this message board. I’ve been getting really sick of the perennial “debate” on race that keeps popping up on Great Debates. Nothing but the same crap over and over again (i.e., the notion of pure blacks and whites, the claim that blacks are poor because their culture is dysfunctional, the charge that affirmative action is institutionalized racism against whites, and so on). Plus, I get offended at how rabidly hostile some of the atheists can get towards religious discussion. If there’s a thread on, say, different Christian interpretations of the Bible in Great Debates, almost inevitably someone will come in and say, “This discussion is pointless anyway, since we all know God doesn’t exist, and only the superstitious believe otherwise.”

Bleagh. And no, these aren’t all of my complaints. Sure, this board occasionally puts up interesting and entertaining stuff, but I’ve found I really can’t stand too much more of the ignorance here. There’s not enough intellectual stimulation for me and too much intellectual aggravation. And now there’s this subscription thing, which is probably as good a time as any for me to quit. I’m not paying to aggravate myself, thank you very much.

Well, I’ve shared the link to the graffiti in Baghdad and to the Internet-based archaeology course on MPSIMS, plus something on Takeshi Kitano in Cafe Society and something else in General Questions for old times’ sake. Those will probably be my last posts. So long, Dopes. I doubt anyone will remember me from anything anyway, but thanks for all the fish.
