The Orville-Seth McFarlane

I think you mean “no reason **not **to make ships as large as one desires.”

Fine. Then your ship has power to waste, and loss of power can never pose a danger, like it does in so many episodes of Star Trek.

… the only junior officers whose quarters we saw—Uhura’s, Rand’s, McGivers’ …

Hey, no body expected a giant hand to materialize and grab the saucer section!

The ship has power to waste under normal circumstances. We’ve often the order to “shut down non-essential systems” during an emergency. My god, I just had the image of a guy getting it on with a holobimbo and having her, and the bed under her, disappear. That’d ruin your whole day.

I’ll wager the authors saw that in submarine movies.

Note to self: If ever having sex with a holobabe, stick with the cowgirl position. And maybe doggie-style. And avoid holobeds–just put a holoblanket on the holofloor, or something. Boy, this is getting complicated.

It’s easier and more resource-conserving to just stick with articulated love dolls if you can’t find a real partner on board.

Of course, now a precedent has been set - you can anesthetize and surgically remove the genitals of anyone you want for your personal use and call it a joke while they go through the minor inconvenience of growing new ones.

On TNG, that would mean at least 90% of **all **systems were shut down, leaving the abovementioned nonessential personnel in the cold and dark with no food, no water, no waste disposal, nothing.

Who said it was Malloy’s ?

That’s almost exactly what David Gerrold wrote about this issue in (I think) “Worlds of Star Trek”

It is only logical.

I’m straight, but confused. Is Seth kinda hot?

I’m gay and he is, but his voice is a mood killer for me.

“Grow a pair” will never be the same…

I think the amputated leg should have been made into a lamp…and then found…a shout out to Christmas Story if you will…

PS. When the “practical joke challenge” was made…my first thought was “oh, I bet this DOES get inappropriate/dangerous”.

He dated Danaerys Targaryen. He’s got something going for him.

Uhura was a first shift bridge officer and chief of communications. She would not have been at the same level as some schmoe.

First watch. And she was one of several communications officers of equal rank who also stood first watch. The question of her seniority was never explored.

She was Sr Comms Officer; a department (or at least division) head. In one episode she was given the command, can’t remember the exact setup. But somehow Scotty wasn’t available who was 3rd in command. Uhura was a fairly senior bridge officer, but it seemed inconsistent if she was senior to Sulu or not.

I don’t remember Uhura ever assuming command. She took the helm in one episode that I recall. I can remember hearing it said (always in non-canonical sources like message boards and such) that she was supposed to be fourth in command, after Scotty, but I don’t think we ever heard that officially, and I don’t remember ever seeing it happen.
