If you had an AMPAS ballot, which film would get your vote?
Huh. I wasn’t aware that Whiplash was adapted, I though the director based it on his own experiences. Let me check the wiki…
So it was first a screenplay, then it was reduced to an 18 minute short film, then it was produced as a movie. Interesting. I don’t know if it should count.
It’s a bit controversial. The Writers Guild of America calls it original (their awards are this weekend) but AMPAS decided that “based on material previously produced or published” included the aforementioned short, and that was enough for them to switch categories.
In any sense, if he was in Original, it’s generally accepted Damien Chazelle wouldn’t have a prayer against this year’s Big 3 (Linklater, Inarritu, W. Anderson), but he does have a better fighting chance where he is now, though at the expense of Gillian Flynn’s GONE GIRL, which didn’t make the cut with the Academy as a result.
