The Partisan

By Leonard Cohen.

This song might just be the best song ever. It gives me goose bumps… It might have to do with the fact that I am French…

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Just had to share.

I am going to ask a terrible question… : Is Leonard still alive?

I believe that I have seen him on television within the last couple of years. He’s incredible.

Here’s a link to the lyrics to The Partisan:

I’ve been watching Band of Brothers for the first time and planning a trip to France with my granddaughter. Just a few hours ago she told me she wants to go to Normandy. And now, your post…

You should go! French people aren’t that bad

My grand aunt was in the Resistance, I am so proud
Her stories were fascinating. She died when I was young. I would always ask her to “tell me the war” and she would change everything too harsh in her stories to make it “fun”. I was young and didn’t know it would be hard for her.

If you like this part of history, you should read “Le reseau du musee de l’homme”. She was the librerian in the museum of man kind in Paris, and a study room now carries her name.
In English the book is : “The Vilde affair, Beginnings of the French Resistance” by Martin Blumenson.
Very interesting.

Charlotte Grey by Sebastian Faulks is also an excellent novel about the Resistance.

Zoe, if you haven’t been already (in which case you’ll know already), you’ll love France. If you’re in Normandy, I recommend visits to some of the war graves. The sight of thousands of crosses, row upon row upon row, marching towards the horizon, is one of the most moving things I’ve ever seen. Pay tribute to the brave Americans who died to keep Europe free.
