Sixties pop icon Lesley Gore passed away this weekend. A highly underrated singer, songs like these never even got released as singles.
…and now it’s Judy’s turn to die.
I never thought she was an underrated singer, she did some wonderful work. Her songs take me right back to my youth, to the good places for a change.
And I always thought young girls should be required to listen to “You Don’t Own Me” and then write a 500 word essay on what it means.
RIP, Leslie Gore. Thanks for the great songs.
Aww, I’m sorry to hear that.
First I got offended, then I laughed. A lot. Well played.
RIP, Leslie. May your afters be full of sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.
Those were B-sides of singles. The A-sides were “Maybe I Know” and “She’s a Fool,” respectively.
I still don’t get the Judy reference. Glad someone figured it out.
I have Its My Party on my mp3 player. Great song. Sorry to learn Leslie Gore has passed. RIP
It’s My Party and I’ll die if I want to.
Judy reference: Judy’s Turn To Cry.
ah, I wasn’t familiar with the sequel song. thanks
I adored Lesley Gore! This had to be her absolute best moment ever:
If I had been in the Boy Wonder’s shoes, I’d’ve told Batman to stick it where the Bat-sun doesn’t shine the second she came on to me! :o
I could never choose between her and Kate Bush.
And she invented the internet.
Batman must have had some inside knowledge. Apparently Lesley had a 33-year longtime companion named Lois.
I started listening to rock 'n roll in 1963 so “It’s My Party” would have been among the first songs to stick in my head. No Rolling Stone or social media in those days, but we knew that she was a teenage girl just like us. She was all of 20 when she appeared on Batman.
She didn’t write any of her hits - which means for some people on this board she’s not a real artist - but she had great taste in songs and great talent around her. Quincy Jones started his production career with “It’s My Party.” Marvin Hamlish had his first hit with “Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows” and wrote the gorgeous “California Nights,” produced by Bob Crewe. Other songs were by a roster of top East Coast hitwriters.
“Maybe I Know” was by the wonderful Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. It’s the opposite to “You Don’t Own Me.” The singer forgives her boyfriend’s cheating but she still loves him. The lyrics hurt today, but the melody is sheer magic, a hook that buries right into the brain.
The sixties were special. Sorry. It’s just true.
CDs ruined It’s My Party for me. The clarity is too good. That dinging sound in the background is incredibly annoying. I used to like it, can’t stand it now.
It’s hard for for people to properly know the way these songs originally sounded.
There’s an in-the-closet character based on Lesley in the movie Grace of My Heart. She has a very touching scene.
