The Path to Pwn

Bit-tech Article

OK, fess up, how many of those rules are you guilty of breaking?

I admit it…I play mindsweeper sometimes and technically have a vacation picture as my background.

I think I break the background rule by having a videogame wallpaper.

Let’s see, my home 12" iBook max resolution is 1024/768, but otherwise I think I’m covered. I don’t know what MSN titles are, because I use GAIM, so I think those cancel each other out.

Then again, my work wallpaper is River Tam brandishing a sword and a giant axe…

I consider myself a seasoned computer dork, but I’m also guilty of breaking the no-Minesweeper rule. Frankly, I wear my Minesweeper skills as a badge. Most people don’t even know about chording (hitting both mouse buttons at once) or flagging mines. My rationale is that I might as well be good at all the default Windows games because they’ll be available on almost any computer I might have access to when I get my urge-to-game.

Seems as good a place to ask as any: What does “FTW” stand for? I’ve seen it everywhere but have yet to work out its meaning. Google says it means “for the win” but that doesn’t really fit the context I’ve seen it in. Any help?

(Guess I’ve revealed myself as decidedly non-pwn-worthy.

Fuck the World.

Aha! Now, that does fit the context I’ve seen it in.

Thanks!

Alright, I’ve had a pwn worthy back ground for years without even knowing it!

Yeah, I can’t believe some people don’t know about chording.

I mean, yeah, chording, of course, how basic. Ummm… But you know what? I dont’ believe YOU know about chording so why don’t you explain about it to prove that you know about it.

Yeah Corporate Hippie, yeah!

I had to open Minesweeper to discover this “chording” thing. What a useful function!

(Pssst, Zebra, if you click on a revealed number (say 3, for instance) it reveals the blocks that count for that square, so you know where the bombs could be in order to give you that number) Hell, that’s hard to explain. It’s easy to understand once you open Minesweeper and try it, though.

I’m at work and Minesweeper has been removed from my machine.

I think I overcomplicated it by a mile.

If you “chord” on a square, it indicates the adjacent squares. Just makes it easier than trying to visually see which blocks are adjacent to whatever square you’re looking at.

Can I have a copy? Pretty please? g

Better than that. If you have already marked a number of mines adjacent to the number equal to that number, it clicks on and reveals all unexplored, unmarked squares. So, if you have a 3 and already right click marked 3 mines next to it, chording on the 3 will left click on all of the adjacent squares except those 3 you have marked.

That’s useless – my brain already does that for me. I just can’t believe anyone plays mindsweeper without using flags.

Any argument that casts the pseudo-word “pwn” in a positive light within any context devoid of rocket launchers and/or zombies, is automatically invalidated and rendered void. That’s my rule, and I never break it.

Only as an incidental side-effect. If you already have the proper number of mines marked around a square, then chording automatically clears all other squares around the one you’re on. If you need help seeing what blocks are adjacent, then you’ll never hope to pwn Minesweeper. 79 seconds on Expert, by the way, and I often play with the self-imposed restriction that I never clear any squares (except the first one, of course) by any method but chording.

And my wallpapers are photos of Yellowstone Canyon, but they’re ones I took myself, not stock. My mousepad is Escher, and I always check sysreqs to make sure it’s compatible with Mac. I’m not sure where this puts me.

Actually, in a gaming/computer context, such as in this article, FTW means “For The Win”.

pwned.

Oh shit, my wall paper both on my work laptop and on my desktop at home are pictures from my vacation in Ireland. (not the same pic though).

I do know about chording in Minesweeper though so maybe I’m not a total loss.

Yes, but context ceases to matter nowadays for this acronym. Having pizza for lunch? Then it’s pepperoni and achovies FTW. Buying shoes? Adidas FTW.
