The PERFECT Storm...

Hey Dopies, did anyone see The Perfect Storm this weekend?

I saw it last night with my buddy Gladys and a Tibetan Monk, Uganto (he was visiting to see the Dalai Lama in DC this weekend). Pretty awesome movie. Ok, it was a fucking incredible movie!!!

I highly recommend everyone seeing it. It deals with men, but it has a love theme too. Half an hour in to it I was one the edge of my seat, and stayed there the whole time, chewing my nails off. I cried, I laughed, I sobbed hysterically. It was better than Titanic (and a true story too!)

My point: ***** all the way!!

Has anyone else viewed it yet? Whadya think? Better than the book? (I say yes!)

Tawk. Discuss. Enjoy.

I can’t imagine it being better than the book. Especially with Wohlberg in it.

I’m re-reading the book for the 5th or 6th time in preparation for the movie…I want to make sure I’m good and disappointed when I walk out of tbe theatre.

I was expecting a perfect flop from this movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve never read the book, but I’m sure it was a lot different (Although it can’t be too different…they’re both based on the same true story).

How much of the fishing stuff is there? Like gory fish killing and stuff? That is the only thing holding me back from seeing this movie…

Au contraire, Cheif. Have you seen Boogie Nights or Three Kings? Or his best movie to date, The Big Hit? No one plays an earnest dumb guy like Mark Wahlberg. The man has a gift.

Shit. That’s what I get for not previewing. Apologies, Chief.

I read the book, and it was great. I’ll catch it on video. I have never liked a movie from a book yet, and it all started with Amityville Horror.

Opal - there is some nasty fish stuff, which grossed me out since I am a vegetarian. It shows them packing the fish with ice and slicing them open - but believe me, it’s worth the brief goriness -only three scenes with that stuff.

BTW, I have read some bad reviews of this movie, which leads me question if I saw the same movie as the critics.

I HATE movie critics, especially the local ones.

I really wanted to enjoy the movie, but I thought it TANKED. The only characters I cared about were the semi-anonymous coast guard rescuers. I almost fell asleep during parts of the film. The accents were horrible. Many times my friend and I looked at each other and, a la MST3K said “He’s ACTING.” The George Clooney speech on fishing had me squirming. Waves were scary, it gave a good picture of how hard fishermen work for their money. The only character I liked was the guy with the mullet who couldn’t get laid.

Does anyone really remember hearing anything of this “perfect storm” in 1991? From what I remember, all I heard about was either Desert Shield or Desert Storm.

  1. Bite your tongue, dissing Mark Wahlberg!

  2. I saw the Discovery Channel’s bit on The Perfect Storm, and I could tell from the movie clips that the movie was highly fictionalized…even more so than the fictionalized book. IIRC, the Andrea Gail just disappeared; there was no rescue attempt. Looks like the writer combined the Andrea Gail sinking with the rescue helicopter that had to ditch into the Atlantic due to failed mid-air refueling attempts. In real life, they were unrelated except for the fact that they happened during the same storm system.

  3. Did I read that they found the distress beacon of the Andrea Gail and it had been inexplicably disarmed, suggesting perhaps that the Captain disarmed it to avoid someone risking their lives to rescue him…?

  4. Speaking of the Discovery Channel, they had a special entitled “The World’s Deadliest Job” or something to that effect, about Alaska crabbers, which I found highly entertaining. You’ll never eat crablegs without thinking of these guys out in the freezing cold… Brrr!

  5. NPR had an interview with the last woman to talk to the Captain, Linda Greenlaw a female swordship captain. She’s written a book about swordfishing, The Hungry Ocean, which is on my “To Read” list. Anyone read it?

I loved the book a couple of years ago. read id in one go, all night awake during a weekend on my boat. The next day I was no good for sailing as I got no sleep. I’ll read it again before I see the movie.
