Why don’t anyone tell me Steve Martin could write. I just finished his latest book, The Pleasure Of My Company, and think I could very easily become a Steve Martin (the writer) fan. Good stuff. Anybody else read this book or any others? If so I’d be interested in your thoughts. Does Martin sound like a blend of any other authors you’ve read?
I plan on getting his earlier book, Shopgirl, this weekend.
Haven’t read either of the novels, but his New Yorker pieces that are collected in Pure Drivel constitute some of the funniest fucking stuff since Woody Allen’s Without Feathers and Side Effects.
Pleasure is currently on my shortlist of books-I-gotta.
I read the story to my wife last month. (She likes me to read to her as she drifts off to sleep). We loved it - one of the best portrayals of a mentally ill person I’ve ever seen in any media. I would also recommend the audio book read by Mr. Martin himself.
I have read “Shopgirl”, also liked it, but not as much as “pleasure.”
MIS - if you liked “Pleasure”, you might try to find a book called “The Man Who Ate The 747” by an author whose name escapes me at this moment. Sort of the same tone.
Also, I know Steve Martin wrote a play that was warmly received, but living nowhere near live theatre, I doubt I’ll ever get to see it. Does anyone know if it was ever published or is on-line somewhere? Thanks
I own Shopgirl. It was the first novel of his I read, and I enjoyed it. I love his humor writing, also. I’ve always been a fan of his but like you I was suprised at how good a writer he is.
Haven’t read Pleasure yet, I’ll be on the lookout for it.
Okay, I reserved these at the library on y’all’s recommendation. No Clue Boy, I reserved both books and audio tapes, I’ll just have to see which comes in first.
I’m glad to hear about other titles by Martin. I read “Shopgirl” and liked it. Also have “Pure Drivel” on audio tape. His first book, “Cruel Shoes,” which came out while I was in high school, was more like “Drivel,” a collection of short stories. It’s not bad either.
