Another IT pro here; former “Sararīman” now contractor.
The software co I worked at for 11 years went through pretty much every possible dress code short of nudism… when it was business: long sleeve button up shirts & ties, casual: T-shirts (bonus points for geeky slogans about 10 kinds of people understanding binary, etc), and when semi-casual / business casual: polo/golf shirts.
No-one would wear button up short sleeve shirts… unless they also wore an elasticated tie and worked as a bank teller.
Now an IT contractor it’s: interviewing and meeting clients: long sleeve button up shirts & tie, day to day: polo/golf shirts, and dress a bit better than the permanent staff.
I have a stack of black polos that go with (just off-) black dress trousers and black shoes (actually low boots; like the ankle support). The dress up version is also all black – that’s not as odd here as it seems to be (from my limited times there) in the US; I recall a day at the old job where we had a “wear all black” day (in support of an NZ America’s Cup race) and I didn’t realise until half way through the day that people were dressed differently.
Hmm… I just did a search of “wolf shirt” and can’t find it. It was the original thread about the wolf shirt on amazon.com, and more than one Doper came in and said (paraphrasing here), “What’s wrong with wolf shirts, and who are all of you to be so judgmental?”
It was one of the most horrifyingly funny moments of the SDMB. Hopefully, someone with better search-fu than me can link it.
I remember way more wolf shirt discussion. Could it have been during the lost weekend? Even a search of “amazon wolf” doesn’t come up with the thread I’m thinking of! I don’t even frequent other boards (well, Giraffe’s board now, but that didn’t exist then!), so I don’t know what else could have happened to it.
Are you seriously asking opinions on whether or not one should own different shirts for playing sports, work and social occasions? The answer is “yes”.
I own nothing but polos for casual wear. T-shirts make me gag. About the only exception are nice thick long-sleeved T-shirts I never get to wear except in December.
Besides, douchebags wear pink polos, not just any polo.
Oh it can be, but it has to be part of the rest of an outfit. Some sort of smartphone (iPhone, blackberry, whatever) is required, with the person constantly checking it, emailing, whatever, because he is just so important and has so much work that everyone depends on him to do.
So not a striped shirt in itself, but a striped shirt as part of that specific kind of outfit.
“That” specific kind of outfit? Having a Blackberry and needing to use it often…with a striped shirt, is douchebag wear? Sure, someone with a striped shirt can act like a douche-bag. But this thread is about clothing and msmith537 seemed to be using it in the context that wearing a striped dress shirt is douchebag wear and followed the links with “dress ridiculously”.
Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y’know that little tag, the one that says “Dockers”? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot.
Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I’ve seen your type before:
Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. What’s this guy making such a big stink about striped shirts? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without them, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we’re too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, unraveling his first striped shirt right now, right now, in a local department store and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees in the dressing room? Doesn’t HE deserve better? Look. If you think this is about fancy shirts and BlackBerries, you’d better think again. This is about that kid’s right to wear a shirt without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe that turns you on, zweisamkeit; maybe that’s how y’get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over.
