Bad Dolores! Bad Tarragon! BAD BAD BAD! No Miracle Whip!
The only way to eat a turkey sammich is with tomatoes and real mayo. All else is simply evil. EVIL I tell you! (Unless you want to add a little bit of onion)
This T-day we’re staying home. We got invites to the grandparents, and from some family friends, but we’ve decided that we’re just going to whip up a traditional type meal, stuff ourselves, and vegetate.
Update on the vandals: Three of the four boy’s parents decided to sentence them to hard labor, so they had thier first weekend of same at Casa Neighborly. T-day weekend they’ll be at our place.
The kids were so nice to the elderly neighbors! They raked the yard, bagged the leaves, and cleaned the gutters on Saturday, and Sunday cleaned out the garage and basement, and sorted stuff for recycling. This weekend they’ll be moving the compost pile and cleaning up dog poop for day one. Still don’t know what they’re gonna do on Sunday though.
Here’s a big blurf from me too. Work is sucktastic right now. I have to use several spreadsheets to reconcile one invoice, but the spreadsheet that the company doing the invoicing sent me is now working properly. UGH. I don’t know what to do, and I HAVE to get this invoice done and sent to Accounts Payable or the company who sent the invoice is not going to be happy at all. I shouldn’t have put doing it off for so long, but it’s such a pain.
I think I’m done whining for now.
No recipes here. I don’t even know if I’m going to make a Turkey. How unAmerican is that? I do have a pretty giant chicken that I might cook–that’s close, right?
I’ve been a slug. I watched a movie, and drank coffee, and ate a leisurely breakfast. Then about 30 minutes ago I started a load of laundry, and folded towels and undies that were in a huge pile on the couch. Now they are all neat and piled on the table! They will be put away sometime today.
I should clean something. The stove is a likely candidate, and the vent hood. But first, I must surf a bit…
Down with Miracle Whip! Hideous, vile substance! Definitely has to be Hellman’s or Duke’s. If we had any leftover turkey, that is. We’re going out again this year. With just the two of us, we can’t be arsed to cook. Plus there’s a lovely restaurant down on the water that serves a delicious traditional Thanksgiving meal that we’ve gone to every year since we moved back up here. We go pig out, then come home to no dirty dishes. Works for me!
Sounds like the little vandals are learning their lesson very well, welby. That’s the kind of parenting I love – make the little shits see that there are consequences to misbehavior that, ultimately, are far worse than the momentary pleasure of being a little shit. Good on them. Except for the fourth kid’s parents, obviously; have they already made his reservation at juvie?
Not much going on here today. I have a doctor’s appointment, and beyond that, I have work that’s not due till next week and zero motivation to do it. I have a pile of laundry and zero motivation to do it. I have a house that needs cleaning and zero…well, you get the picture. I’m knitting a sock instead. Hey, I’m being a good girl, trying to get another small project finished – I’ve got about a dozen projects on the needles that are at a point where I could finish them in 2-3 days, so I’ve vowed to finish two for every new one I start. Socks are fast, especially with yummy Pagewood Farms yarn – it has a really tight twist and doesn’t split at all, so it knits like a dream. Even if it does need to be knit on toothpicks. I really should do laundry at some point, though; can someone please send some motivation my way? Pretty please?
T-day will be at my parents’ in PA. We’re flying out Wednesday and back Saturday. Should be good.
We do turkey, stuffing/dressing, and cranberry sandwiches. With mayo, NO Miracle Whip!
I also am a big fan of turkey divan, but the kind that uses cream of chick soup, not the gourmet kind that involves white sauce. It’s supposed to be a '50s era casserole and specifically not gourmet! Sheesh.
We saw Quantum of Solace yesterday and really enjoyed it. Yes, it is action-full and maybe a little plot-light, but it fit with the previous movie and moved the new series along. Plus, Daniel Craig! ::swoon::
And we saw the preview for the new Star Trek. Wow! It looks awesome! I can’t wait until May!
This is a two-day week for me this week. Wanna guess where my motivation level is?
Forgot to add - I’d post pics of the Noro scarf per Mama Tigs’ request in last week’s MMP, but I can’t upload anything to photobucket from work. Access restricted or some such silliness. Apparently they don’t think we need it for anything work-related! Maybe I’ll post some from home later if I remember! Unfortunately, though, my camera can’t seem to get the purples right so it all looks blue. Which is pretty enough, but it’s not how it really looks.
thems that don’t care for the Satan Snot, aka Miracle Whip. That shit is oogy. Gives me the shivers it does. I come from a long line of mayo-globbers. Cains was the preferred glob back in good ol New England, but gotta use Best Foods out here in sunny CA. (70 and clear as a bell yesterday. Probably gonna be another drought year.)
thems that loves them some turkey. Why does turkey taste so good? Why is it better than chicken? Don’t know; don’t care.
Sigma. Turkey soup is one of those “sum greater than the parts” things. It’s a mystery wrapped up in an enigma. God I love it.
I don’t mess around with any other leftover turkey reskipees. Hot turkey sammiches with mashies and stuffin until its gone. This is me; this is what I do.
Don’t you hate it when the mashies and gravy is gone way before the turkey? HATE IT! So last year I took the bull by the horns. I made 20 pounds of mashies and over a gallon of gravy. Determined to have enough I was.
We combine households with an old pal of mine, as over here at El Rancho Malario its just me and my wife, her muvver, and Edwina the Four-Pound Wonder Doggie. So there is a lot of splitting up the leftovers, which further compromises the turkey/gravy/mashies leftovers ratio.
Me pal’s muvver actually got upset when she saw how much mashies I made. Claimed we would have to throw a bunch away. HA! In your face, scoffing muvver person! Between Dave and me, we ate every bite. All hot turkey reheated in the gravy slathered on the leftover mashies. Oh yeaaaaahhhhhh.
Bobbio, we have baked Scotch Eggs before and they worked out fine, but I don’t recall that we changed the prep any. I think the GirlChild made them the way you described, however. I say, Give it a go and report back. I lurves some Scotch Eggs!
As for leftovers, we have passed the baton, or drumstick, as it were, and now go to one of the chillins houses for T-day, so we don’t have leftovers. sniff
My favorite leftovers back in the day were turkey sammiches. Take one slice of gooey white bread, the kind with no nutritional value whatsoever, slather on a layer of sage dressing. Pour on some reheated turkey gravey. Lay on a thick layer of sliced turkey. Put some more gravey iffen you want to. Cover with another slice of gooey white bread. Eat over the sink. No mayonnaise, or Miracle Whip, is necessary.
When I was a young man, and single, I used to eat turkey about once a month. I like turkey. I would buy a boneless turkey roast, about 6 pounds worth, and cook it in the pressure cooker. When it was done, I’d hoist the meat out and divide it into 1 pound portions. All but one would go into the freezer. The first meal would be turkey noodle soup, with the broth from the turkey pressurizin’. The other turkey portions would star in a variety of meals. usually Chalupas, Turkey Stroganoff, Turkey Paprikash, etc. You get the idea.
I agree with Bro2, Miracle Whip is Satan snot. We usually have t-day dinner earlyish, so for a late supper we usually use up the leftover dinner rolls for sandwiches, with mayo, turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce (the jellied kind), with NOT 'n gravy on the side. I like to make this with gravy.
I have actually been getting scheduled off of work a lot lately. Sucky economy = nobody shopping. However, I expect Firday to be as fun as ever. Tradition, you know?
Blurf? So that’s what it’s called! OK! (haven’t been to the MMPs in a while)
This past Saturday was the Princess’ 7th birthday party. She had a touch of food poisoning (or maybe it was the flu) on Thursday, but by Saturday had recovered well enough to enjoy her birthday cake. She had the idea for the theme of her birthday party, which was “Around the World.” I had to shoot down most of her ideas for the implementation of said theme, as many of them involved elaborate costumes and elephant rides. We ended up doing this thing where the kids were given “passports” and sat in chairs laid out as though they were in an airplane. My sister, acting as the pilot/tour guide, took the group to 6 or 7 different tables in the back yard set up to represent different countries or continents, and each table had a treat or activity for the kids. For example, the Asian table had little cups of tea and popcorn in Chinese takeout boxes with chopsticks to fish it out of the box, the Europe table had pizza and “champagne” (sparkling apple cider), and the Mexican table had the pinata. I made a mix CD with music to represent each part of the world they “visited”. The kids loved it.
Sunday I woke up to find out I caught whatever bug the Princess had. I spent most of the day in bed, getting up only to go to the can, wash up, and make sure the kid had something to eat. Fortunately she was good and finished up all the homework she had missed due to being out sick. Right now I’m home, not quite caffeinated (only 1 cup of green tea), and contemplating going back to bed. Man, I feel like crap. We were going to take one of my coworkers out to the Cheesecake Factory for her birthday, and I’ve never been to the Cheesecake Factory, and now I’m going to miss it.
Oh yeah, Thanksgiving! One of my sisters just bought a house, so she will be hosting T-day this year. I’m in charge of making the stuffing, the new homeowner is making most of the other side dishes, her twin will cook the turkey, and our youngest sister will be baking the pies. As for leftovers, I concur with most of the Mumpers - turkey sandwiches with mayo and tomatoes are the thing. My mom likes to saute whatever random bits of turkey are left with onions and tomatoes. This is pretty good with leftover mashed potatoes on the side.
Here’s a recipe that has minimal breadcrumb usage and is baked–oughta work good. You have to have SOME crumbs to make the sausage stick together, but some of the recipes I looked at use about four times the crumbs this one does.
Oooh, this one uses ground turkey and has an option to replace the breadcrumbs with ground flax seed–sounds promising, and a lower fat option than using pig sausage. I think I’d substitute turkey Italian sausage for the plain ground turkey because I like the spicing better.
Himself is right in the middle of the HR portion of the interviews for the job he’s been going for and it’s looking very, very good. Man, we could use some good news! Heh, he just wound up and says they confirmed that he did extremely well on the tech part of the interview–the HR lady just told him that she’s had people who ended up crying, screaming and cussing the tech guy out after being worked over on that part of the process. Apparently they’re extremely impressed that he managed to make it through two hours of the tech section, didn’t miss any of the questions and didn’t lose his cool in the slightest. My guy is teh D00D! :D:cool:
Roo, Tofurkey really isn’t all that. I like the mushroom gravy that comes with it, though. The Tofurkey “roast” itself is kind of…food-like, but not really food. It’s like every bad joke about tofu, for real. And I *like *tofu.
I’m having sweet potatoes and gnocchi in cream sauce for T-day. Maybe some cranberry sauce. I’ll have dressing throughout the weekend just because. I saw the physical therapist today and she says no solid food for another month. The good news is that I should be back to normal by then. The bad news is there will be limits on the kinds of food I can eat in the future, like no more sourdough.
So can I blather on about whatever I want? Webs is having a sale on Noro Cash Island, a wool/cashmere mix. I intend to visit Webs in person some day. Although they are quite nice about bringing a substantial amount of stock with them to Stitches West, it’s just the thought of a warehouse full of yarn, with Costco-sized shopping carts, well, YUM!
I’m spending the afternoon separating perforated cards (Lominger Leadership blah blah blah). Pointing out that we employ people to do this sort of thing does no good. My time doesn’t hit her budget and that’s all that counts. (However, next month, she will complain that I spend too much time on “stuff that could be delegated”.) In my spare time, I need to think of fun activities for the family holiday activities. I have $25 for crafty-stuff. We’ve decided to recycle office supplies. So I thought, why not have the kiddies do a Lomingerforced-sort? Bwahahahaha! The holiday party from hell! Obviously, I’m punchy and I need to go home. Can I go home now?
Howdy Y’all! Not a particularly chatty group today I see.
I was on the Dope then got off cause my neighbor called to ask if he could hide some Crimmus stuff in da cave. Bein’ as I am a good neighbor I said sure. He said he was glad cause his truck is parked in my driveway with him in it cause the kids are home and it’s their stuff. So I have Sandy Claws stuff for the neighbor kids. Also, two of the presents are laptops for the oldest kid and his wife/live in/whatever. I asked him if he had a wireless network so everybody could be online at the same time at home. He replied, “Oh sh*t!” Then asked what he’d need to do. So we got online with AT&T, created him an account cause he’d never done that and got him a deal on a home network. With the rebate and discount because he already has dsl with AT&T, it’ll cost him nuttin’. The router, startup kit etc. will be delivered to da cave and should be here by the end of the week or Monday at the latest, when one figures in the Turkey Day holiday. The following weekend the wife/live in/whatever and kids will be gone for the weekend so we’ll get that set up. They won’t really know the difference cause it’ll look like what they already have. Then on Christmas Day, surprise! New laptops and wireless internet for everybody! I’m likin’ bein’ in on all this.
Sigma how do you really feel about soup?
Puggy a wine cooler? That’s pretty cheap! Why not spring for the whole four pack instead of just one? After all, it’s a Christmas present.
Hullo, all. Haven’t been here much at all lately. Hope all are keeping well. Not much to say (which is why I haven’t posted). I am not making the meal this year, so I will have no leftovers. Lemme put that another way: I will not ask for any and will graciously refuse any offers. Why? Because my SIL is “cooking” Turkey Dinner this year. I will not explain more.
I tend to not have leftovers of turkey much beyond say, Saturday at the outside. Perhaps this is because I buy a bird big enough to serve to the guests, but no bigger? I do like to eat the wings (not an asked for item in this house) the next day with leftover gravy. I have horrible flashbacks of my Dad’s turkey “soup” made from leftovers one year when my mother was sick with stomach flu just after Tgiving. I cannot describe the smell, much less the taste of that meal.
I don’t do turkey leftovers. YMMV. Did you know that Israel is the largest consumer of turkeys year round? I took a turkey quiz a few weeks ago and got that one wrong (I said USA). Who knew?
Mmmmm, Turkey Divan is good, too. Do you use the recipe where you add mayo and curry to the cream of chicken soup, taxi?
Sigmagirl: can you share your soup recipe? And your homemade noodle recipe?
I owe recipes for: Turkey Divan, Get-Well Garden Soup, Enchiladas Suizas. But I need to get some moving around/cleaning stuff done before I come back with recipes.
Other EMT sounds like she was a piece of work, Bobbio. So sorry.
Off to get stuff done…
ETA: OK, so that was freaky. My next SDMB thing was going to be to PM** rigs **to see how things were going because you’ve been MIA lately. Didn’t see your post till I’d submitted mine. ::waves and jumps up and down and stuff:: How are things?
