the almost turkey day mmp

yep, i started it and since its almost turkey day I figured why not

So everyone ready for the grocery sales next week? all of ours start on Wednesdays I think we bought almost everything but I hope potatoes go on sale … we haven’t had any in a few weeks because I think 2.50 and over for a 10 lb bag is too much

One store had them for 1.50 and they were sold out even before they could send out a store ad …

other than deciding if we’re going to cook the duck I impulsively bought the week before last we’re good on the eats since its “not supposed to be a pig-out and were not feeding an army” lectures we’ve been getting

anyways here we go !

I’m going to be all alone for Thanksgiving. My son and his wife can’t make it this year. My daughter and all my other relatives are too far away, and my local friends will be with their families.

Way back before the now-ex got anti-social, I used to cook a big Thanksgiving dinner for friends and whoever had no place to go. One year I fed 20 people, including a number of strangers. I loved it. We moved away and eventually got divorced, but I had friends who invited me over every year. I brought the homemade pies.

I’m OK with being alone on Christmas, but Thanksgiving is harder, somehow. Not sure if I’ll make a little Thanksgiving for myself or just try to pretend it’s an ordinary day.

But I’m looking forward to learning what everyone else is cooking up!

well if you’re near a Dennys they have a take-home thanksgiving dinner offer this year they haven’t said how much this year but i had the in restaurant version and it was pretty good …

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 53 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy (partly moony?) with a predicted high of 68 and mostly cloudy (partly N.O.S.?) for the day. Today is spiff da cave day and tonight is men’s night over to the church house. Also, at some point I will go meet the plumber over to the church house about a leaky terlet. The fun never ends!

As for Turkey Day, we will host a feast for twelve folks includin’ us. We shall provide the turkey (already bought), dressin’ (I’m from the south so it’s dressin’, not stuffin’), giblet gravy (it’s all about the gravy, if the gravy ain’t right might as well throw everything else out), deviled aigs, and cranberry sauce. Munchies, side matter, and desserts will be provided by attendees. We’ve done this for a buncha years and 'tis always fun.

Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy wants to be fed. Then, bother, alas, alack, I suppose I should purtify and don appropriate bein’ about the public attire since I must leave da cave sometime this mornin’. Life can be just so awful!

Happy Moanday Y’all!

I have no bun in this fight as I’m from a far away land with apparently nothing to give thanks for, but I’m following along because I’m jealous of the holiday and I love turkey and all the trimmings.

Not sure about the sound of the marshmallow/sweet potato thing though. What’s THAT all about.

**Vito **- I agree about the marshmallow/sweet potato monstrosity - it makes my teeth curl. But I lurves me some baked sweet potatoes with cinnamon-butter.

We get a turkey at work - they’re distributing them on Thursday this week. Once mine is thawed, I’ll smoke it, carve it up, then freeze it for our Christmas dinner in FL with the inlaws. Meanwhile, my mom is hosting Turkey Day yet again, but only **FCD **and I will be going from here. Daughter and SIL will be taking Roxy and going to his mom’s this year. But we get them for Christmas, so there’s that.

SIL starts his new job today (FINALLY) and I’ve got errands to run, which means I’ll be dragging Roxy around for a few hours. I have to pick up some yarn I ordered at JoAnn’s, stop at WalMart for critter stuff and cold medicine, then go by Food Lion for groceries. I hate having to take the baby in and out of the car seat, but I can deal, and she’s usually fun in the stores - chattering about everything. At least I assume that’s what she’s doing. For all I know, she may be reciting baby incantations.

For now, she’s sleeping, so I can get a few things done here, then onward into the day.

Happy Moanday!!

We wuz just talking last night about the details, at least some of them. As is my normal, I shall be responsible for the main course whence we have our famibly Thanksgiving dinner. That shall be cooked outside in the smoker, along with a wholelottaotherstuff[sup]®[/sup]. The following day will be another multi-hour cooking event as is always the case when making the post-Thanksgiving smoked jambalaya. That is all turkey-based meats (since BiL is allergic to seafood), including the leftover smoked turkey & the also smoked turkey andouille & turkey chorizo snausages.

Debating whether I also want to contribute a cheesecake, as well, but it seems like they’ve stopped making Hershey’s pumpkin kisses, which I used in my pumpkin cheesecake. :frowning:

Dressing is the fluid one puts on salad. Stuffing is bread & seasoning one serves as a side on Turkey Day.

Smoked turkey don’t need no gravy; it’s that moist.

Taking sweetness of potatoes & adding extra sweetness to the top of 'em. My guess is that someone concocted it to ensure some little kid(s) et their sweet potatoes but I don’t know the proper origin of it.
I had a good topic to start us off today but didn’t start before going to bed as someone did…
My Dad’s old business phone was one digit removed from a neighborhood pharmacy. Back in the day when one actually dialed a phone it was not unknown to get phone calls for them. A quick, “You have a wrong number, they’re ‘3xx-xxxx’” usually sufficed…except for one day when a little old lady called & when being informed of said wrong number insisted that she dialed right but he answered wrong. :smack:  :dubious:

I had one of those last night. Driving along the darkened country road, at the last second, I used my tire in the further production of road-kill venison pancake. (It twas already dead but in the travel lane whence I rolled over it). I knew where I was, & where the local police station was, where they usually hang out but not their phone number. My choices were to pull over to look up the local number (which, given that department’s small size probably went to the same place as) or call the nationwide 3-digit number for police assistance (Hey, wasn’t my job to stop & drag it outta the road). I chose option #2; however, given my location, so close to the state line it was picked up by a cell tower across the river so my call was answered by the wrong state/county. Luckily, it was not a life-threatening emergency, merely a call for police assistance so (hopefully) nothing happened in the delay in transferring me over. Of course, by the time I got to report it to the correct place, they already knew about it as someone(s) else had called.

Someone’s going to have to walk me through the turkey smoking thing. The rest I get (sounds a lot like our Christmas dinner, minus the marshmallows and green bean casserole). But always assumed you just shoved the whole turkey in the oven like we do, and serve it with gravy.

Step-by-step please… I might not do it for Christmas (certain traditions are sacrosanct) but I’m always open to new recipes.

We’re having a starter of curried butternut squash soup with ginger shrimp, then the usual T-day bird, stuffing, taters and gravy, and homemade cranberry relish. A guest is bringing dessert. Speaking of stuffing and gravy, I need to pick up a couple of turkey legs to make some turkey stock for same. Got the turkey reserved for pickup next Wednesday and will likely do a dry brine.

Morning all. Waiting for the house to warm up before start the Great Laundry Day. 42F out heading for 57F and N.O.S. for most of the week (rain for the weekend).

I go up to my brother’s and SIL’s house for T-giving, they usually ovenate a Turkey and a variety of potatoes and stuffing and other goodies. Usually at least two of my three nephews/niece make it in, along with their dogs (Bassets, Bloodhound, and English Mastiff). Don’t discuss much as I am a liberal agnostic and they are Trump-loving Lutheran fundamentalists, but they are good folks anyway.

No problems with any phone numbers like you had spidey, except for all the Medicare Advantage providers being able to find my number…

All y’all have a good Moanday now.

Mornin’ Y’all~the Siamese were screamin’ mee-mees at the very crack of dawn. FOOD us now Mom, was their refrain!! I went back to bed for awhile. Never really slept, again.
Me and DIL have talked over the holidays. She’s taking over, along with mid-daughter. Son-of-a-wrek fries the Turkey-bird.
Time was I woulda balked at this. Not this year. I’ve had a tough year.
Thought I was going to see the kidney Doc about test results today. I looked on the calender. My appointment is tomorrow.:smack:
I’ll finish planting bulbs today…
Gotta eat and start moving around.
Have a good Monday all!

I’ve convinced the Princess her canned food is an evening event (she has dry down at all times), just to avoid the “furry alarm clock” problem.

Allie has also decided that my hitting the snooze button is her cue to come get snuggles.

Nellie, if you Facebook, check your town’s group. Maybe they have something going on for those who are single on TDay. I get it. TDay to me is all about friends and family. Now it’s just my sister and me and I get sad thinking about the olden days. I will drive an hour to my sister and BIL’s, then we will go to his sister’s. It will be a small group, no more than 7 or 8. I plan to avoid all stores this weekend because they will be mobbed. I did see my Jewel store has frozen capons. Who eats capon? That’s another thing from my childhood 50 years ago.

Took Ursala Kitteh to the vet at 8am. She’s been doing a weird thing with her mouth, like something was stuck. Turns out her canine (one of 4 teeth left in her mouth) was loose and bloody. She managed to work it out in the vet’s office. She got an antibiotic shot and pain meds. She goes back in Firday morning for xrays under sedation and root extraction if necessary. Poor girl. Ask me, smoke free for 16 days, how badly I want a cigarette…

Happy Moonday!

Home from the park, not so bad as it was an above freezing 35 degrees outside. We stayed for almost 2 hours today, although Ripple was ready to come home long before that. It’s wet and drizzly outside, supposed to get up to 46.
I almost left earlier as a new dog showed up and she and one of the regulars kept getting into it. I was worried about Echo because she sometimes goes running to see what is going on. Ripple used to do that, but I called him back enough that now he knows to stay out of it. Echo is still kind of stupid.

I need to go back out later as my gas tank is getting low, and I need to pick up a prescription I didn’t stop on the way home because it’s easier to get gas without the dogs.

No idea yet as to what I am doing for Thanksgiving. I know I’m not cooking, I doubt the whole family would come even if I did because it’s a two hour drive each way for them. They usually divide their time between his family, her family, and the kids’ other parents’ families. Since they are all mostly in the same area nobody is going to want to travel all the way up here.
I don’t know where I’d put everybody if they did show up. The HFH wouldn’t come, even if they were invited, which they won’t be. Better if somebody neutral hosts the dinner.
I have another invitation which is under consideration. They invite me every year, but I have yet to accept.

The company I irk for just did a mass hiring of new people. Now irk is really slow as there is a lot more competition for the calls. It sucks, but I have been through this before. Eventually enough people will quit and equilibrium will be established once again. Just happening at a bad time, I have a mess of Christmas gifts I need to pay off.

Nothing to cook today. I will be eating stuffed peppers for a few days.
Won’t be doing any yard irk today as it is too wet to do anything.

My mother called yesterday, but we didn’t get to finish our conversation, so I need to call her back today.

At some point I’ll go get gas and pick up the script. Not until after my son wakes up so he can watch the dogs.

Since I’m alone, and loath turkey, I am deciding between pizza and pasta Alfredo on Thanksgiving.

Our baby 'noreaster has rolled in, with the house moaning from the wind and rain running off the roof. At least it’s liquid, not solid. I’m not looking forward to the drive to dialysis in THAT.

Wet one Get some nicotine replacement. Gum or lozenges will take off the edge.

Blurf Another week and here we are at irk. Kinda quiet so far for a Moanday.

**Vito **- I always roasted my turkey low and slow in the oven, and smoking is the same thing, except it’s the smoker and I add the wood chips. I have an electric smoker, which makes it easy. I never stuff the bird, so that’s not an issue, tho I may toss some onion chunks and celery in the cavity for flavor.

And I agree with you on the green bean casserole thing, too. I don’t get the appeal. I make a really good dish with onions, green beans, mushrooms, and oyster sauce - very yum!

Anyway, back from erranding. I scored 2 good packs of used meat - steaks for tonight’s supper and a brisket for some future meal. Plus I got the other stuff I needed at the other stores. Roxy is finishing her lunch, and she’ll go down for her nap shortly. Then I’ll assume the knit position again for a bit.

It’s drizzly and dreary, so I’m glad to be indoors againn.

For the first time ever we are not cooking and going to a neighborhood affair. I don’t know how I feel not having leftovers. Thinking about making something at home too. Or ordering a ham or turkey or both already cooked.

I have to irk the day after so not really much of a break.

Thanks for the suggestions. The buses don’t run on Turkey Day, and I don’t live near a Denny’s, but I went to the local nextdoor website, and nobody is offering anything. There are a lot of rants about the (huge) homeless population. I think people and organizations are afraid if they open their doors for community Thanksgiving dinners, they’ll get deluged with homeless people :frowning:

Anyway, don’t worry about me. And I definitely don’t want to rain in this very sunny thread!

Does anyone use dressing and stuffing interchangeably? I’m from the south. Stuffing is bread and seasoning (one grandmother made it - never see it any other holiday event) but dressing is primarily cornbread and chicken and it’s always here for the holidays. I don’t actually eat either, except for the one time my aunt made dressing without onions for my cousin.

My parents will host. I will make a baked macaroni and cheese I don’t particularly like (because my father and grandmother want me to use this recipe) and probably a red velvet cake.

I don’t do the sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, but do like the one we call a sweet potato souffle that has nuts. I don’t really care for most traditional Thanksgiving foods. I do like mashed potatoes, but my family never has them (and they’re only good hot, anyway, and often not all the food is hot because we always have way to different things to have them all finish at same time).
