The American Thanksgiving MMP

Good Morning Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 39 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 66 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Today I shall go over to the church house to help with puttin’ together Turkey Day meals into boxes and deliverin’ the boxes. Also tonight is men’s night over to the church house thus steaks are marinatin’ and beer is chillin’. Cave cleanin’ must also occur, but on the plus side the place is relatively clean.

So, Thursday is Amurrkin Thanksgivin’ Day. I assume most Amurrkin Mumpers have some kind of plan for some kind of feast. Twelve people will descend upon da cave to feast and in general make merry. People are bringin’ various sides and munchies. I have a twenty pound turkey in da fridge beginnin’ it’s thaw. I shall also make cornbread dressin’, giblet gravy, the sweet N.O.T. which are sliced, glazed with a vanilla glaze and baked, not the nasty casserole kind with marshmallows which is ICK! Oh and cranberry sauce from the can which is the only kind I can abide. So, what’s everybody else doin’?

Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy demands sustenance. Then I suppose I should purtify since I shall go about the public.

Discuss the topic or hijack away. I expect the hijack to win hands down.

Happy Moanday Y’all!

W00T! First!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to work. I’m working Thanksgiving Day, because if Aunt Edna doesn’t get 2 bottles of Merlot in her by 2 ,Thanksgiving Dinner ain’t happening.

My mother is hosting, as usual. I’ve already smoked and sliced up a 17# turkey and she’ll be roasting a 15# bird. There will be far too much food, as usual, and it’ll take us about 15 minutes to inhale it.

The one item that’s always served that I’ve never seen anywhere else is sweet N.O.T. pucks. That’s not what it’s called, but that’s what it looks like. My sister Kathy usually makes them. The tubers are peeled and boiled (or boiled and peeled - I’m not sure the order) then when they’ve cooled, they’re sliced into 1/2" discs (or pucks) and fried in butter until at least part of the surface is black.

ick

I prefer mine baked with a little butter and cinnamon…

One addition this year, tho, will be a surprise baby shower after dinner. There will be 2 preggos present, but my daughter won’t be returning to the area till after the kid is born, so my sisters planned this shower, and they’ll do one for my niece closer to her due date (a month after my grandbaby is due.)

Until then, I have a metric buttload of stuff on my desk, so yay!

Happy Moanday!

Good morning! I’ve been a bad mumper lately but here I am once again.

Thank heavens for a short school week! Thursday will be dinner at my dad’s girlfriend’s house. Saturday we’re going down to my child abusing mother-in-law’s house. That’s always guaranteed to be a good time for everyone. While I suspect she gave up beating people years ago, she’s always good for a verbal assault and so many cigarettes chain smoked in a tiny space that you won’t be able to breathe and will reek of cigarettes for the rest of the day. That wouldn’t be so bad except that RT used to smoke so it’s hard for him to be around it.

So, yes, back to good news… It’s a short school week!!
Oh, and I almost forgot, a Turkey Trot on Thursday morning and thank you Spidey for the clothing link you posted a long time ago.

Afternoon, mumpers! Thanksgiving for you lot over there is just another work day for me - guess it’s going to be a bit quiet in here while you’re all stuffing yourselves silly

Plans for Thursday include:
work

Plans for Friday include:
work
do laundry (laundromat)
then go to meet the local Mensa chapter.

I’m doing laundry in part to force myself to stay out until 20:00, when the meeting takes place. I know that if I go “home” I won’t leave again and dammit I want to meet these people.
Speaking of “home”, for the last three months I’ve been in a small aparthotel; nice place but a tad too small and a tad too expensive for my tastes. I’ve found an apartment that, while tiny, has an actual kitchen, actual bedroom and actual living room, for a lower price. The previous leaseholder has found a job Back Home and taken it with alacrity; the owners asked her to find someone to take over the lease prettyplease. I’m taking it officially on December 1st and moving on the 2nd; I don’t want to go to work with my car loaded to the nonexistent rack.

And I’ve just checked and the place where they meet is close to the new apartment, by Nava standards of “close”. Wooo!

People combine marshmallows and potatoes?

Never heard of these! :eek::eek:

Can I put on ketchup? :dubious:

fried black?:eek: Not me, I tell you!

That’s the way my grandmother used to make them. Weird family stuff, yanno!

My calculator died over the weekend. This morning, my watch was dead. These things come in 3s, right???

You were doing so well…

Butters in case you missed my very last post in the old MMP, I suggested that your gut feeling might be your body’s way of telling you to stay home and take it easy. You’ve had a looooooonnnng year.

I think this year we are staying home and it will be just us and the kids. Sweet N.O.T. are made into a casseroles, mashed with brown sugar and spices. It’s baked, and served with marshmallows that are browned on top the last few minutes.

'Beamer sounds wheezy and terrible. Poor guy. 'Tis cold and flu season.

I will go to my BIL’s sister on T-Day. That’s my sister’s husband’s sister. I think it’s just 6 of us, but his sis will cook for 15. I look forward to a turkey wing, stuffing with gravy, and green bean casserole. I can take Firday off if I want but have to use PTO so why bother? No Black Friday shopping for me.

So, checking in from the future - we have ordered the whole feast pre-cooked from the nearby Whole Foods market. I have deeply mixed feelings about this. There will be only 4 to 6 (still not sure) eating, so it’s not reasonable to prepare a large traditional feast. I’m a cook, I like to cook, I’ve prepared the traditional feast many many times in the past. But my spouse and our guests are not cooks, so it would all be on me anyway. Life just doesn’t always work the way you would like it to.

In past years we have gone out to restaurants, which is also an alienating mixed bag. In some cases the meal was…fine. But I miss the full variety of dishes, and I really miss having leftovers.

Once we went to a buffet style - boy was that a hoot! It was a mess, literally and figuratively. I enjoyed it for the abundance of food, and was entertained by the hoards of people attacking as if it were Helms Deep - but my spouse and friends found it to offend their delicate sensibilities. Heh, amateurs.

Were I not married, it would be Fu Linn’s with sweet and sour chicken and hot and sour soup.

I have never tried hot sauce in the cranberries.
Hmmm…

Last year (I think it was last year), **FCD **and I stayed home and pretty much ignored Thanksgiving. It was great!! No noise, no dishes, no huge mess. But with a grandbaby on the way, I guess we won’t be able to ignore holidays any longer. Spoiled rotten kid!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Blurf.
Evenin’ all. The lecturer who had been off for the last 3 weeks resurfaced today, with baby pictures and, somewhat randomly, cookies for everyone.

I have lots of energy and no inclination to use it. It’s an odd feeling. I should probably expend some of it in going to get some bread though, as I’m out.

Pepper pup is off at doggy playland, as the weather is windy and rainy, and I have a nasty headache. She will have a hoot with her buddies.

I am trying to lure kittehs to come and cuddle with me. 'Beamer took both of the cuddle dogs for himself, since he is sick.

I feel like I should do a thing today, but I am undecided. Perhaps laundry things.

Sunny That is exactly what Hubby said. Don’t just go cause of the money that has been spent. I don’t leave until Wed afternoon so still more time to consider.

I am just one deep at irk today so I have been helping out in the front office selling tickets. We are finally getting a few customers. All are staying out in town as all our available housing is still being used for displaced employees or families. The hurricane blew the roof off our biggest hotel and now everything has to be replaced in a six story building. That is a huge hit as far as cheap housing for tourists.

Have a Great week everyone.

I don’t visit the MMP too often, but here goes if you’ll have me.

Bought my 21# bird yesterday and have started the thawing. It’ll very slow roast when the time comes. The rest of the menu is simple and straightforward, given there’s just 4 people who are all light eaters. Roast Delicata squash, mashed mixed potatos, sautéed asparagus, and non-sweet pumpkin custard for desert. Plus snacks, etc.

It’s sunny, breezy, and 80-ish. All is right with the world. As long as I don’t look too far past the end of my nose. It gets to be a right mess once we raise our gaze to the horizon.
