The President gets to decide what the lawmakers see.

He gets to edit the reports on whether or not Homeland Security is breaking the law.
And we all know how trustworthy The Leader of the Free World is. He would never lie or torture or ignore clear warnings just so that he could do what ever the fuck he wants. He’s the Decider and he decides what the people who make the laws in this land get to make laws about. It’s like that because checks and balances are for whimps.

This might have been better placed in GD, because I am curious as to whether anyone can offer a valid support for all this “unitary executive” crapola. In my Big Golden Book of The Constitution, it sort of implies that the executive is empowered to enforce and implement the laws as the Legislative branch decides. Maybe he is confused about what the phrase “execute the laws” means?

He hasn’t started referring to himself as “We”, has he?

Why the fuck do we even have legislators if Bush can just willy-nilly “disregard” whatever the fuck doesn’t suit him? It’s as if he thinks he’s the fucking KING, or something.

Maybe you can start a thread in GD. I don’t have the time to do a GD thread justice or the patience to deal with the mealy-mouthed, so-called legal and Constitutional experts who are sure to come by and defend this shit. When I think someone is being an asshole, I like to come right out and call them an asshole, which is forbidden in GD.

Here’s a GD Thread that’s just started up on signing statements.

Big Girl speaks, and it is so. She rules by fear, I understand…

I should hope his food is sufficiently screened and cooked to avoid cause for that.

I don’t know enough to intelligently comment on the specific issues posed by the particular laws cited in the link. However, the idea that the President has a Constitutional role in supervising/operating Federal officers and agencies that can’t be invaded by Congress not “crapola”.

For example, I am confident that if Congress passed a law stating that, henceforth, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff would report only to Congress, a President could ignore that law, as it invades his Constitutionally delegated executive powers.

Again, I offer no opinion on the overall breadth of that doctrine, or whether it extends far enough to cover the situations identified here.

I won’t defend Bush’s idea of the unitary executive, but the Constitution says more than what you seem to think (emphasis added) about executive power. And there does need to be some limit on what Congress can tell the president to do since all three branches are supposed to be co-equal. If Congress passed a law that said SCOTUS justices had to be at least 50 years old, I expect that would be unconstitutional. Still, Bush does take this to an unprecedented extreme-- well beyond what I think is justifiable.

And I’m not sure how he’d be able to get around the FEMA director thing, since Congress has to approve whomever he appoints anyway, no?

Nah, it’s just that I have zero patience where this administration is concerned and for those who continue to defend it. None, zilch. It’s been a long time since I can be civil about it and I don’t feel like getting banned today.

And starting a GD thread can get me fired. I used to start them all the time until my boss called me into his office and asked me, “What is this Straight Dope and why are you spending 5 hours on it?” Too much time pulling up cites and defending my stance.
Besides, I’m not the least bit scary.

Then you are just as blindly partisan as a mindless Republican who unthinkingly supports everything that Pres. Bush says or does.

On balance, I don’t support the current administration. That doesn’t mean that every single position that it takes is wrong and indefensible.

Yeah, don’t bother trying to start a GD thread. You’re obviously too busy picking up where Reeder left off. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t see a Biggirl anti-Bush thread on the front page of the Pit.

Dear Lord Ashtar and Random,
Fuck you and your stupid accusations. This administration ignored multiple warnings of the upcoming attack on our nation and then lied about it. They have nibbled and then taken huge chucks of our civil liberties, they have tortured and looked for and gotten permission to torture. There is nothing blind about my anger. My anger is very justified.

Again, fuck you very much you Goddamned Idiots. And kiss my big, round black motherfucking ass.

That’s right, you keep fighting the good fight, toots.

That’s it? That’s all you got? Go back to GD where you can finagle and hedge and but… but… LOOKIT OVER THERE! to your hearts content and not get called the goddamned idiot you are.

I have NO PATIENCE for this shit at all.

Oh and P motherfucking S. How about addressing the matter at hand? You know, the President deciding that our lawmakers should go in blind if he doesn’t like what it is they may see.

I’m making no comment about Bush’s actions whatsoever, Reederella. I’m just tired of seeing you start thread after fucking “OMG Bush is teh evil!!!” thread.

If only he would stop doing shit that warrents such threads, we could both be happy.

Meanwhile, if you have nothing to say about the actual subject of this thread, please go back to sucking this administrations dick. Wait— you seem to be a master of multitasking. You can not add anything of substance to this thread while sucking dick at the same time. You go, Lord!

Agreed.

And Biggirl, you will note that I did already address the unitary executive “matter at hand”. Try reading and thinking, rather than spewing knee-jerk anti-Bush rhetoric.

“If you don’t like my thread, you must be a Bush supporter.” Good one.
