The PTC and the WWF

OK, my first major rant.

http://www.parentstv.org

this is the homepage for the PTC. They have taken it upon themselves to attempt to censor the WWF. A simple target for them, as wrestling is popular with kids, and the WWF are winning the popularity stakes against their rivals, the WCW.

My problem with the PTC is this. There is so much more you can be doing for your children than harassing the WWF.
Yes, it is Violent.
Yes, it does contain some mild swearing.

but there is a simple solution to this. Rather than sit down and watch the WWF and then writing your letters to Sponsors claiming they are funding their childrens moral slide into hell, turn off the TV (or change the channel).
Spent time with your kids.
If you dont like it turn it off.

The WWF is a Soap Opera. It does not condone the use of Knives or Guns.

It constantly encourages kids NOT to do these things at home.
so please, PTC, lighten up.

Ya, I always thought some careful, attentive parenting could negate all of the violence and swearing found on TV. What the hell do I know I guess…

My parents let me watch this stuff back in the day, but they were both great parents, and I guess that’s why I grew up as good as I did. Well, that and it wasn’t Quite as violent and explicit as it is today.

Not to hijack John, but this is along the same lines as filtering out all web content because Junior can’t control his pubescent urge to look at naked girls on the internet. Pisses me right off…

Why can’t people just be good, attentive, restrictive, caring parents these days? It seems to me they’d rather blame some entity(a la Southpark, rap stars, WWF, WCW, Beavis & Butthead, the internet Etc.), for the violence in our society rather than accept the responsibility for the raising of their children.

Just like to add, I completely understand that parents cant be everywhere. I dont expect parents to be able to sit down
and watch everything their child watches on TV.

But there is a larege audience for the WWF that (like I am) understand what I was looking at. I have been watching wrestling since I was 7 years old. True, It should be on at an hour where it is appropriate hour, with a “censored” version available for before that. But to bitch and complain about the WWF when they’d be more good done if they took a listen to some of Britteny Spears lyrics.

Interesting point, John. What’s worse; the WWF, or a teenybopper song that certainly sounds as if it’s about how girls should rather let their boyfriends beat them up than be single?

sitting with my dad in the early 60’s at the ripe ol age of 10 or so, agrueing how fake it was, and he took the real position. Never found out if he was serious, but it was time with my dad. That’s when Dick the Bruiser was my favorite. I can’t watch it for long these days, but I will sit with my 13 and 15 year old sons and argue the opposite about it with them…kinda fun, ya know.

RickJay, I wasnt speaking so much about “Hit me baby One more time” as thats too obvious to mean what it sounds like.
Her new song “Oops! I did it again” seems to say “I’m gonna treat you like shit because I know you’re gonna come back for more”

John, your OP reminds me of a story I saw come across the wire yesterday. Seems in Indianapolis there is now a law that states that any violent arcade games must have a black curtain around them so that those of the non-eighteen year old persuasion cannot play or even look at them.

First off, by making these games “forbidden fruit” the government will only increase teens interest in them.

Secondly, we are not at the point where arcade games look like reality . . . nope, they still look a lot more like animation. So does this mean I need a black curtain around my TV when I watch Wile E. Coyote get smacked by a dozen or so very large rocks ?

Lastly, many of these same teens see violence that is equal (and in most cases even worse than arcade games) on the nightly news, regular non-cable programming, and yeah on their PlayStation - N64 - DreamCast.

I totally agree that parents need to make what goes on inside their own house a bigger priority than forming groups and making idiotic demands. If these PTC folks have such a problem then sit down with the kid during a broadcast of WWF and explain what is true and false.

Explain what is right and wrong. Seems to me that is the parents job in the first felchin place.

My $.02 worth.

If this keeps up,where will it end? Remember, even Lassie died at the end of the movie. Wanna “censor” that?

Just wanted to join the group of people ranting against the over-censorization (I know it’s a made up word, best I could come up with) of wrestling, etc. While I am not a fan of wrestling, I think this falls into the idiocy of parents complaining about Married with Children having a bad influence. If you spend the time to teach your accepted set of values and ethics to your kid, then they will most likely follow the same basic line.

And, if we overly censor things for kids, what will they do when they hit the real world on their own and are bombarded with all of these lascivious images and ideas? At least they can more easily rely on parental influence while they are younger.
