The finale epitomized the tenor of QAF’s first season --dismal, depressing, and miserable. Dr. Dave and Michael break up, Blake chooses crystal meth over Ted, and Justin gets gaybashed with a baseball bat.

The relentlessly bitter, cynical, nihilistic tenor of the show could not have been more homophobic if it had been an Anita Brtyant production, written by Pat Robertson and directed by Fred Phelps. There are no happy, stable gay people in the entire show, and the typical gay milieu is shown to be a non-stop whirl of empty sex, drugs, and late nights at the local disco. Would it have killed the producers to have introduced one note of hope in the entire show?

I also found the idea that Brian should enter the fiery ritual of carousel at 30 disgusting. Where is it written that gay men lose all attraction at midnight on their 30th birthday? It’s just one more instance of the self-loathing QAF seems to promote.
