The Rainbow Connection

The punk cover everyone is referencing is by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - “Are a Drag”. Pretty darn good cd, and the weird thing is, I was just listening to it when I saw this thread.

Punk covers of “Evita”, “Over The Rainbow”, and for you Rocky Horror nuts, “Science Fiction” on that cd as well.

And they feel like Swedish tits, too.

Kick a man while he’s down, why don’t cha? I thought for sure you’d go the “taste” route…

I like Me First And The Gimme Gimmes. Their bass player/singer is the legendary Fat Mike from NOFX. They kick ass.

What pisses me off is that MFATGG are touring this summer, and NOFX aren’t. Dammit that pisses me off.

Well, I think I’m an important part in the rainbow connection. I’ve been cruising around Texas for a while with my Rainbow fuzzy steering wheel cover and my Rainbow bandana headband. Amazingly, I’ve never had anyone yell “Fag!” or anything. In Texas… well, Austin which really isn’t the same thing.

Good luck on finding it. You’ll do it some day. The lovers, the dreamers and you.

Tygr. Thanks. Right place, right time.

Ok here’s the thing. Lazarus7 actually is my husband. And when I logged into the SDMB yesterday and saw this thread, I had to immediately comment on it, and also send him the link. We argue about this song at least once a day so I knew it was a thread we could both sink our teeth into! It was quite a coincidence to find it at all, considering I haven’t been on the Dope in months and just started re-acquainting myself. I log in, and this is the first thread I see! Weird.

Furthermore, Lazarus7 is an MCSE-certified computer nut, which means that we have 24 computers in our bedroom. This means that we are not using the same computer. Come on, he hardly ever limits himself to only using one at a time - why would we share with each other? So generally if I want to say something to him and actually have it register on his radar, I send him an ICQ. That will work better than me talking. Especially if he is listening to his punk music.

So as I said, I sent him the link and then proceeded to add my comments to the thread. Completely unbeknownst to me, he was posting to it at the same time. Simulpost!!

And I didn’t even know about it until my friend Silent_Rob tipped me off today.

You may now return to your regular programming!

Moooooommy, can I go over to Brunetter’s house? Her husband has 24 computers in his BED ROOM![/wkv]

Iloveyou.

Even the songwriter thinks it’s a good song, too:

Oh, totally. TOTALLY! And I’m British: I don’t even say totally.
But Mr Henson was a genyoo-ine living breathing genius. I’m serious. I don’t remember the song from the movie, but from a show called The Muppets 30 Years Special (or something). My father interviewed Jim Henson and was sent a copy of the show on tape. It lay in his room until we got a video, two years later, and it’s now fifteen years old and still working. It remains the most enchanting (that’s the only word) piece of television I’ve witnessed, including what I now realise must have been an excerpt from the first movie. I watched it over and over and over, and it gave me somewhere to hide when my adolescence got unbearable.

There’s also a clip of some guy singing “Come with me… and you’ll be… in a world of pure imagination…” to a bunch of weird Muppety creatures (some floating, some not), and… oh, I’m near tears. It speaks of eternity and infinity and creative justice and I just love it. Labyrinth was barely a smidgeon of what it could have been, even though it was great.

What I’d love to have seen was a collaboration between Terry Pratchett and Jim Henson. Muppet Christmas Carol was probably the most accomplished of the movies, but of course, the rest were works of art. Only Treasure Island was even clearly a kids’ flick. Kermit really must be in charge. He is the quietly authoritative voice of sanity. So easily squished.

It is to be hoped the new Mr Henson will learn his father’s art well and guide it forward. I’d hate to lose them.

And Muppets Tonite stunk, by th’way…

That would be Gene Wilder, playing the role of Willy Wonka, in an excerp from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Incidentally, didja know that there’s a really old star catalog called the Ross catalog, and that several red dwarf stars are commonly referred to by their Ross number? (e.g. Ross 154 and Ross 128)

So its been said and some choose to believe it… I know they’re wrong, wait and see…
I have the Kermit mp3 and the Less than Jake mp3. I’m completely obsessed with the song. I keep trying to convince my friend to make his band cover it. (They’re punk/metal with a weird Everlast aftertaste.)

I didn’t know Mr Wilder sang it. That sounds cooler. But the guy I saw was a black guy, and I’m pretty sure it was a Muppet Show segment.

I didn’t know about the star catalogue. That is VERY cool. Various chunks of the south and north poles are also named after me. And loads of stuff in Scotland. And some dweeb on Friends… I think we have a new winner. I shall be selling these stars as soon as I can find some tourists.
That’ll teach ChiefScott to call my username “fey”. Ha!

I’m pretty sure Sammy Davis Jr did Candy Man on the Muppet Show…

jayjay

According to Jim Henson: The Works ( a great book that I HIGHLY recommend) Sammy Davis Jr. never hosted the Muppet Show. If it was him, then it would have been from a different show or special.

The only black male performers to host the show during it’s five years were Ben Vereen, Lou Rawls, Harry Belafonte and Dizzy Gillespie. Any of them ring a bell, Ross?

Paul

Nothing more to say except that Me First And The Gimme Gimmes effin’ rock! Never heard Rainbow Connetion by them before though. It may stay that way, as I like some things sacred.

Well, if you do want to check it out, it’s on their second album “Are A Drag!” (as in Me First and the Gimmee Gimmee’s “Are A Drag!”). The album is all show tunes, and is a pretty fun disc.

Here in St. Cloud MN lives a man, also named Paul (last name Drinkwine) who does a wonderful rendition of “The Rainbow Connection” in Kermie voice, and his wife and their friends sing harmony on the reprise.

Just checked my tapes and it was Ben Vereen.
