Why are there so many songs about rainbows, and what’s on the other side?

Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.

I think that ATMB is where you’re supposed to try out new sigs, Montfort!
Yowza! Congrats, if this is what I think it is. Or I may have completely missed something. I’m doing a search now…
Nope. Nothing turned up, so let me be the first (?) to congratulate the both of you!
You might wanna try Anniz and I are no longer dating.
But don’t panic. To save you the trouble and the stress, I’ll letcha know now that the title of the thread refers to the fact that they’re now engaged.
Hence the sig.
Actually, my sig isn’t that new, and I’m not testing anything out. This is a Muppet Movie appreciation thread, which only jayjay picked up on.
Munch: Thanks, but it’s old news. Look at this thread for all the gory details.
One day we’ll find it…
Hey! I picked up on it. I just don’t know the darn song by heart. I’ll have to rewatch it when I get home.
I love this song!
Its sooooo sweet and dear and huggable and darling and cute!
snif
I have a movie to go watch…
Thanks for the reminder Montfort, its a happy touch!
“What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing, and what do we think we might see?”
sighs happily
My dear Medea’s, the same thing could be said about you.
That said,
“Some day we’ll find it, the rainbow connection”
[sub]Suddenly remembers his goddawful singing voice. Begins to tune the banjo, carefully keeping his eyes peeled for Scylla reloading.[/sub]
Actually I think Scylla “picked up” on it right away…
And at the risk of getting “picked off”, here goes…
[my best Kermit the Frog, which is pretty darned good]
“For the lovers, the dreamers and me”
[/my best Kermit the Frog, which is pretty darned good]
My kids LOVE this song…probably because Kermit and I sing it to them almost every evening…
They’ll undoubtably hate it and have great ambivalence toward frogs when they’re older.
Odd, I just saw that movie for the first time in years two weeks ago. My mother asked if I could find a copy so she could include it in the tape library for the RV before she and dad went on vacation. It was as sappy and cornball as I remember it but I enjoyed it as I’m not a complete hardass.
I’m still trying to find the Muppets Go Medieval. “Mom, why is that muppet made of leather?”
I know that Me First and the Gimme Gimmes covered that song, but I have no clue who did the original.
It was written by Paul Williams, and I believe it was written for the movie. Not sure, I’d have to check my books on Henson and the Muppets when I get home.
I have the MP3 of Kermit singing this.
“Who said that every wish could be heard and answered when wished on the Morning Star? Somebody thought of it, and someone believed it, and look what it’s done so far. What’s so amazing that keeps us star-gazing, and what do we think we might see? Some day they’ll find it . . . the rainbow connection . . . the lovers, the dreamers and me. All of us under its spell. You know that it’s probably maaaaa-giiiiiiic [key goes up one notch].”
Okay, okay, I’ll stop:)
Have you been half asleep? ANd have your heard voices? I’ve heard them calling my name. I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it. It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
and on that note…
Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending. Keep believing. Keep pretending. We’ve done just what we set out to do…Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.
Kids just CANNOT appreciate the muppets.
sniffle
I love that song!
/me tunes up his WinAmp and double-clicks “Rainbow Connection”, closes his eyes…and dreams
This song has given me chills since the very first scene of the very first time I saw the Muppet Movie when I was 8 years old…from the aerial view of the swamp, down through the trees, with the first banjo plinks, to see Kermit sitting on a log with his banjo as the song takes off…
The key change just gets me shivering…the song is just…
It’s simple, but it’s…
Okay, this is getting silly, but I can’t put it into words. It flips switches that not many things do.
Is this an artifact of the wonder of seeing the Muppet Movie as a child? Or does this song touch older folks the same?
Truthfully, I never thought any of the later Muppet movies came close to TMM for sense of enchantment. But I do sometimes wonder if that’s because I was young enough when I saw TMM that I hadn’t become jaded to the puppet thing.
Anyway…
jayjay, lover and dreamer…
so did LTJ
mm, crappy ska bands playing songs originally done by frogs
The Muppets Rule!!! I’m 22 years old and I am absolutely in love with the muppets. In fact to some degree the Muppets helped me connect with my fiance’. We met on a blind date, and as it turns out we both love the Muppets. It was a great way of breaking the ice. The humor of the Muppets works on so many levels. They’re funny to both kids and adults. Beyond that, there’s just that wonderful innocence about them. Jim Henson was absolutely a genius. Somehow, no matter how crazy my life gets I can listen to the soundtrack or watch one of the movies and feel a little bit better about the world. It’s a nice place to return to when things get nuts. I figure if I can still hold on to a little of that wonderful spirit of love, caring, and silliness that is so much the trademark of Henson’s work with the Muppets, life just can’t be that bad.
Some say it’s the sweet sound, that calls the young sailors…
Incidentally, anybody remember the “bard” character class in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons? He’s supposed to be able to implant a suggestion, as per the magic-user suggestion spell, by wording it into a song. The spell description for a suggestion spell contains, as an example of how you’re supposed to use it, the idea that the spellcaster could point at a pool of acid and “suggest” that it was really a pool of fresh water and a quick dip right now might be refreshing. (D&D often assumes that everyone you meet is probably your enemy, you see.)
Back when I still played D&D, I had great fun pretending that my bard character was singing to a group of monsters, pointing to a pool of acid, plunking the strings of his Ollamh banjo, and singing the following song to the tune of the first few lines of “The Rainbow Connection”:
See that pool over there, well,
It’s really fresh water,
And a quick dip now might be re-freshing!
