The Raspberries to reunite...um, OK.

No offense taken. Just a matter of taste. I’ve never been a big Eagles fan, myself.

I heard the Raspbetties broke up because they were in some kind of jam.

Just found this thread. I agree that $45 is rather a lot for a band that didn’t experience a lot of mainstream success. I don’t know how many people will be forking over that much. But as to the criticism of the band:

Granted they didn’t have the commercial success or longevity of the Eagles. But I don’t think that’s a valid arguement as to their worth. Plenty of great artists didn’t have hits. And due to the commercial pressures, etc., longevity can’t really be considered either. Staying around longer than the Beatles doesn’t make a band better than the Beatles.

As for the music: Only Big Star came as close to defining the concept of Power Pop, that is, the combination of hooks, power chords, and harmonies. They took these “Beatley” concepts and brought them to a 70s crowd that was inclined to devalue 60s music. Don’t forget this was a time of pompous and pretensious (sp?) “art rock.” 3-4 minute songs that someone over the age of 12 could enjoy was a true rarity. They (with Big Star) served as a bridge between the Beatles and the New Wave groups of the 80s. From New Wave, it is a short hop to the Elephant Collective and Fountains of Wayne, etc. You can make the argument that this type of music is unworthy or whatever, but critics disagree with that assessment and the Raspberries are considered to be part of the foundation of this music style.

Because of these reasons, I think the Raspberries should rightfully be considered to be one of great bands of the 70s.
