I can’t say that I’ve ever tried that stuff but I never would for a couple of reasons: I don’t like diet sodas and I don’t like chocolate (make that three reasons, 'cause ñañi says it sucks.)
I am a Sprite freak and rarely venture far from that beverage of the gods. There’s a great deli in town here that has over 100 different sodas on any given day. The owner gets a bunch of regional stuff from all over the U.S, lots of obscure brands and flavors and kinds that you would have sworn disappeared a generation ago. The sandwiches are great there but it’s worth a trip just to check out the sodas. Bubble up, Nehi, Moxie, Mexican Coca-Cola (w/real sugar), Faygo…
Haj, you must, you must, you must go out and find some Bundaberg’s Lemon Lime Bitters. This is what Sprite and 7[sup]UP[/sup] dream of being on a good night. It is simply the finest clear citrus drink I’ve ever had. I’m still searching for the perfect lime soda, but until then I have Bundaberg’s.
Does anybody kow if “JOLT COLA” is still made? Twice the sugar and three times the caffeine of regular cola! This stuff will make your ears ring!
DR. BROWN’s CEL-RAY Soda is truly weird…I haven’t been able to develop a taste for it!
MOXIE: positively vile! My gradmother used to drink this stuff-it almost made me sick!
ralph124c, please notice how Jolt no longer uses their old, “All the sugar and twice the caffeine!” slogan anymore. Last I checked, they are now using the nefarious High Fructose Corn Sweetener. This is a tragic loss to the world of soda pop as they were one of the few soft drinks that actually tasted like Coca Cola used to.
For those Dopers in northeast Texas, there’s always Ifs Ands & Butts for all your soda needs.
And for you non-Texas Dopers (poor y’all), they ship six packs and cases. Here’s an alphabetical listing of their products. Pretty much every soda in this thread is available.
Does anyone remember Bierley’s Orange uncarbonated soda? I hear it is still available in Thailand, of all places. How weird, even Google didn’t turn up a link for it.
Also, anyone remember the Neptune sodas from Denmark? Their “Grape” which stood for grapefruit was fantastic. I still have a bottle of their beer in my collection somewhere. The label showed a pooch holding a bottle of the brew in its mouth.
God’s gift to mankind. A refreshing citrus soda (the ORIGINAL citrus soda!), Sun-drop is my personal favorite. In fact, my hometown is one of the top 3 sales markets for it in the world (behind most of North Carolina.) Dale Earnhardt himself used to appear on the 20-oz plastic bottle size (they actually called it the Intimidator.) Can be kind of hard to find, though. It’s also available in Diet and Cherry Lemon.
Man. still no Tomato Sodas! Zenster, you’re the gastroartiste, mebbe this is a nice ticket, what with salsas being the rage these days. Tomato juice, soda water, a splash of maple syrup and balsamic vinegar and Tabasco, maybe chipotles…Try it!
For the Cheerwine fans, here in NC there is a Cheerwine ice cream; vanilla swirled with a Cheerwine sherbet. Bought it for a coworkers birthday party, he luuuuvvvvss Cheerwine. I thought it was kinda strange, but he loved it There’s also a Sundrop (Mountain Dew cultivar lauded by brianjedi) ice cream. Leave it to NC.
Not mentioned yet, but Bam-A-Lam great: Bleinheim’s Ginger Ale, especially XXHot. A South Carolina company that makes wonderful ginger ale.
Well, I just had to go out and grab a few more odd sodas today. Not only did I snag some Green River, but I also latched onto the first glass bottles of Vernor’s I’ve had in beaucoup years. Since I was shopping at the premier purveyor of boutique soft drinks, I was compelled to bag some Bundaberg’s Lemon Lime Bitters as well.
Well, yes, the brand name is an anagram of “vomit,” but puke never tasted this good.
I was visiting the Middle East Food Store yesterday and saw that they stocked Vimto in the cooler. I remarked how it had come up in my discussion of odd soft drinks (no mention of vomit, however) here and the owner’s daughter promptly reached in a grabbed one for me, gratis.
Being a sweltering day outside I went for this chilled soft drink like a rat up a drainpipe. Wary of how a previous poster had misnamed it “Vitmo,” I steeled myself for some sort of metallic quasi-medicinal decoction. Instead, it was a delicious raspberry and black currant bit of fizziness.
Evidently it is one of Britain’s older soft drinks, dating from 1908. They proclaim that the recipe has not changed significantly since then. I think they are forced to use the term “significantly” because the dreaded HFCS rears its ugly head on the ingredients list. [sigh] I wish they’d just use sugar and get it over with. Unlike American producers, I have noticed that many of the British makers use a combination of sugar and HFCS in their products. For that, they get a modicum of increased respect from me.
Found it! They had it at the deli that I mentioned earlier. I swear there isn’t anything that that guy doesn’t have. I expected to have him order some for me and he actually had some in the back. I will give you my review after it cools in my fridge at home for a few hours.
Brilliant, Haj! This soda is so fine that you’ll want to ingest it without any melting ice cubes watering it down. Way to go! I look forward to reading your review.
I just remembered this vile stuff that I had in Korea. They just called it cider but it had some Korean name that I never learned. We called it bubble gum juice because it had the exact flavor of Bazooka Joe bubble gum.
I love birch beer. The one’s I’ve seen are a dark reddish brown color rather than clear. I don’t know about CT but here in eastern PA it’s pretty common, although not as common as root beer. You can occasionally even find it on restaurant menus.
Now that was some great stuff. Very smooth. Less carbonated and more flavor than Sprite. It seemed a little too sour on the first sip but after that it went down really well.
