She was still only the heiress when she stated so unequivocally, and then reiterated it more than once in public events. The abdication crisis that thrust George VI onto the throne left an imprint on the family. Yes, I believe that they’s only consider it for a case of disability… and to be a figurehead monarch you do not need to be that vigorous.
Exactly who, when and how Arthur, Duke of Brittany died is unknown and a mystery.
1994? Puleeze. She was still in college fercrickiessake.
I like him well enough as well. I hope he reigns for a good amount of time and is well received by people.
You mean Liz Truss, 19-year old member of the Liberal Democratic Party?
Whatever happened to her?
People who keep saying that Charles’s past will make him a bad king need to read up on their history of the royal family. He’s a saint compared to some of his ancestors.
His ancestors didn’t live in the era of social media and a 24-hour newscycle, though.
To paraphrase a tweet I saw earlier, it’s not as though Charles is going to Mr. Bean his way into destroying the monarchy.
I was responding to another post about him dying quickly, and merely pointing out that odds are the only way he would have a short reign was if he were to quit rather than popping his clogs. I did not mean to imply that he would or should do so. Apologies that it came out that way.
Except insofar as I am deeply skeptical of massive inherited wealth, and ambivalent at best about the whole concept of aristocracy in general and monarchy in particular, I wish him a long and happy reign.

Don’t you realize Liz Truss is now PM? Here is her speaking on the subject:
Wouldn’t it be fun if she breaks out of her current act as a weather vane to show this is her true self!
I like the moniker the French hung on her: the iron weathercock.
I’m not a Brit, so this is only a Yank’s observation and opinion, but Charles isn’t terribly popular in the Commonwealth, and there have been rumblings for years that the monarchy has outlived its usefulness. I wonder if it might not make more sense for The Firm if old Charles steps aside for an extremely popular young king with an adorable family. I think the Brits would embrace William and Kate much more than Charles and Camila. But that’s just an outsider’s perspective, so YMMV.

Just a few years ago, we were debating whether the Queen should have stepped aside for Charles:

I’m not up on the formalities of letting go of “Queen” power under English law, but Prince Charles is now 68. Is hanging onto power this long the right thing to do?
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
Charles III is already around the age Benelux monarchs tend to abdicate; he’ll die in the saddle like his mother.
His great great grandfather ended up being a good King, despite being a very unpopular Prince of Wales to a beloved Queen Regnant.
I suspect when he kicks the bucket, it will be much the same.

The speculation that I’ve read in the past is that Charles originally planned to use George as his regnal name, both to honor his grandfather and because of the associations of the name Charles.
I’ve heard those stories to but I think they were spurious. Those closest to Charles claimed that he never discussed his regnal name choices because such a discussion would involve talking about the death of his mother. And while that is legally treason, Ithink it had more to do with Charles not wanting to start out conversations, “When my mum dies …”

Heck, here in the U.S., Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali took us years. Even Ricky/Rick Nelson gave some of us fits.
Whatever happened to that Lew Alcindor guy? Seemed like he was gonna be big, and then he just disappeared.

The first divorced monarch since Henry VIII.
George I was divorced.

Eh, technically. But a very slightly qualified “Arthur was extremely likely to have been murdered on King John’s orders in late 1203” probably nails it.
I cut John less slack than Richard III. And I cut Richard very, very little - the Ricardians are simply wrong .

I assume that taking that name might therefore (further) piss off the Scots.
Of itself, I doubt it. There aren’t many Jacobites left, and anyway Charles Edward wasn’t fighting for Scottish independence, but for his father (and ultimately himself) to rule over both kingdoms, i e., replacing a German with a Franco-Italian.
He changed his name to Roger Murdock. He’s an airline pilot.
