Correct and as you note they are worth a fair bit of coin. Take away the Crown Estates and they’ll still do just fine. Better than me certainly and I could totally cut a ribbon. Well, after a couple of practice tries anyway .
Despite her popularity and longevity, QEII didn’t really leave a stamp on the era or culture of her reign the same same way Victoria and the first Elizabeth did. In fact, the most significant artifacts of her reign are probably a Sex Pistols song and a Netflix series. Chuck’s impact will likely be significantly less than that.
Charles, “progressive”??? On what issue(s), other than climate change (which is rapidly becoming an ideologically neutral acknowledged global crisis, rather than a specifically “progressive cause”)?
King Charles III is speaking now and he just made William the new Prince of Wales and he legitimately looked like he teared up. The title meant a lot to him.
Such a lovely sentiment.
I thought he gave a fine speech, said all the things that were expected and needed to be said. The speech was well-written in my opinion and his delivery was on point, which must be difficult to do the day after your mother dies.
There is a very good chance that they will be included. Caesar, Edward VII’s terrier, is the famous precedent.
People still carry a torch for Diana
Now there is a person whose popularity mystified me. She was cute, not extremely bright, and had a sad time of it, and that’s about the total of her life. Why she became an international idol is beyond me. Charles actually thinks about stuff (yes, I agree heartily with many of his opinions) which is frankly more than you can say of most of the others, most especially Princess Die.
the king stated:
“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their life overseas.”
after he listed william moving into new titles, now prince of wales, interesting.
he did well with his first speech.
there should be corgis in the funeral procession.
Well, their wealth is their stuff. And, our President spends too much time being a ribbon-cutter and hand-waver, attending state funerals, etc.
Right.
I concur. Not to mention she cheated on Charles (who cheated on her, of course)
Charisma is a mysterious, unpredictable thing. (Cf. Donald Trump.) The Diana phenomenon was similar to the Jackie Kennedy appeal that I well remember from my adolescent years. The world was fascinated with her. And Jackie wasn’t even as beautiful as Diana although she started out with the fashion sense that Diana grew into. Even JFK referred to himself at a dinner with Charles de Gaulle as “the man who accompanied Jackie Kennedy to Paris.” (This is how I remember it.)
Oh … yeah.

Princess Die
Wow, that’s cold (if not a typo).
I believe autoincorrect strikes again

His great great grandfather ended up being a good King, despite being a very unpopular Prince of Wales to a beloved Queen Regnant.
Was Edward unpopular as Prince of Wales? I thought he was a social lion whom fashion followed slavishly. Of course he might have done Good Works instead of going to parties and having mistresses, but I wasn’t aware that any of that lowered his general popularity.
Fun fact: apparently his mother wanted him to use the regnal name Albert Edward as an honor to his father, but he decided to stick with his already-familiar given name.
Eh, Charles had to marry a virgin to please his grandmother, and since he put off his marriage so long, the only woman (barely adult) he could find who was suitable had nothing in common with him. He convinced her he was in love with her, and then she finds out shortly after her marriage that he’s still fucking Camilla behind her back. If I were her, I’d had have cheated on him, too. I was not a Diana fan, but I felt pity for her. She was killed in the prime of her life, and she did more actually beneficial charitable work than almost anyone else in the clan.

but he decided to stick with his already-familiar given name.
His given name WAS “Albert Edward”; he was known as Bertie to his family throughout his life, but formally was Prince Albert Edward.

It’s such a pity for her as well as Charles and Camilla that he wasn’t allowed to marry the woman he loved and who loved and understood him. Diana could have gone on to marry someone far more suitable for her and lived whatever that fate allowed. It’s rare indeed for royal marriages to have the kind of loving partnership Elizabeth and Philip enjoyed, and I suspect Diana had no conception of what royal life would be like for her, and no real aptitude for it.

Not to mention she cheated on Charles (who cheated on her, of course)
And Diana as I understand it had more than one paramour, while Charles had one love of his life.

What are the odds now that the monarchy is eliminated altogether after the next general election, when I assume the Tories will finally lose their majority?[/quote]
In the UK? Zero.
The odds that Charles will be the last King of Australia? That’s a different question. From what I have heard, if the 1999 vote would have been to replace the Governor-General with a President that had veto power over acts of the Australian Parliament, instead of a rubber stamp, it might have been successful.
