It took me a minute to notice the butterfly (a monarch, I think) about to land on his shoulder.
The first article says that it’s not know what kind of cancer treatment he’s receiving, but the 2nd one says that loss of taste is a side effect of chemo:

And @Smapti I would give that portrait mixed reviews too!
I like the painting a lot.
Agreed - I’d love to see it in person. Online pics won’t do it justice.
Reminds me a bit of Obama’s White House portrait.
There was some comedy show about the Royal Family that was very funny. It didn’t have someone playing Liz, though.
Appropriate username for the answer to my unasked question! Thank you!
I though the same thing.
Interesting. I like it too, but it looks to me like he is slipping away. Very much the portrait of a man at the end of life fading away. So if that is the inferno I’m not sure it’s good news for him.
I like the painting, but I hope he’ll have a more traditional one done in natural colors, too.

third.
i’m not a fan of red… it is quite the break from the usual portraits…
i have to say well done, charles.
(and now that i reviewed what i just typed. i was not going for a flames-chuck roast-thing.)
It reminds me of the picture of Dorian Gray. (As depicted in various movies.)
Or that self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh.
I like it. It’s non-traditional and, well, gutsy.
BTW, Charles didn’t ask for it:
The 7.5-foot-by-5.5-foot portrait was commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Drapers, a medieval guild of wool and cloth merchants that is now a philanthropy. It will hang in Drapers’ Hall, the group’s baronial quarters in London’s financial district, which has a gallery of monarchs from King George III to Queen Victoria.

Any portrait of him would draw the whole spectrum of criticism as well as compliments. “Boring-- too traditional! Too avant grade! He looks too old! He looks too young! He doesn’t really look like that! Too realistic-- make him look better!” It goes with being a public figure.
the worshipful company of drapers… bless the u.k., they just come up with the best titles.
Gotta love 'em!
It has the formal name The Master and Wardens and Brethren and Sisters of the Guild or Fraternity of the Blessed Mary the Virgin of the Mystery of Drapers of the City of London.
Their coat of arms:
The first thing I thought of when I saw that painting was that my mother, who was an amateur artist before her death, would have absolutely hated it but thought it appropriate. She despised the color red used in a dominant way, just absolutely hated majority red-colored anything. I’d get an earful if I accidentally took her out to lunch wearing a red or reddish shirt which she would consider offensive, that sort of weird bullshit. But in context she despised monarchies (hmmm…maybe it’s genetic) and would have thought the infernal/blood-soaked idea was apropos.
That was my immediate thought.

Excuse me while I pedant. That’s not the White House portrait. That was a painting that went to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The White House portrait is in the article below.
A rare medium well done?
I didn’t think he looked quite infernal despite all the red until I looked at it closely, and saw that the brush strokes both around and in front of him look like they are swirling in an aura pattern. A red aura. So yeah, infernal and regal.
