The Religious Right Is Dumb, And the Secular Left Is Paranoid

I’m neither, but I feel like it should be pointed out that Hillary Clinton is probably religious, secularism is mandated by the 1st Amendment not the Left, and the Democratic party’s platform is far closer to what Jesus taught than the Republican’s.

Where have I been the last two decades? I’ve been living and working in the transgender community at a counseling center as a staff member, and I’m a professional transgender journalist.

  1. Transgender employment protection. That’s been settled?

  2. The rights of transgender students to participate in school events and use school facilities that congruent with their gender identity. I’m sure you must know that the current Administration’s Title IX actions are not enshrined in case law.

  3. Coverage of transgender medical care under Medicare or insurance. Even the most basic things like hormone therapy (which is not expensive) isn’t covered by most employer’s insurance policies.

  4. Protection from discrimination in housing and renting for being transgender.

  5. Protection from discrimination in banking, finance, and loans for being transgender.

  6. Treatment of transgender prisoners (in my state, as with many, even if you’ve had full SRS you can still be placed in the prison which aligns with your sex assigned at birth. Meaning that you either are forced into solitary confinement for your entire sentence, or you just get used to be raped nearly every single day, like two transgender ex-prisoners I personally have interviewed in October).

  7. Transgender military service, while permitted under policy currently for the last few months, is not enshrined in law. It is an “issue” which has not been settled legally, as a new Administration can revoke and reverse it. So says Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who I have communicated with by mail, as well as Colonel Suzanne Wheeler, the highest ranking transgender military officer who is out.

  8. VA policy for transgender veterans in health care, housing, and treatment is by current policy only, not enshrined in law.

  9. Have you perhaps been asleep the last few years as the “trans toilet terror” issue has been used by the Right to rile up people with the Big Lie that we’re all just a bunch of sex criminals in dresses? How has that issue been resolved in the public eye? It’s not been resolved with the transgender woman and man I counseled last week, who were physically attacked in two separate incidents for trying to pee.

  10. Transgender persons still face a variety of legal barriers in many states for getting proper ID, and in 2 states it is impossible to change their birth certificate. I’ve personally interviewed the state officials in those two states. Also, the federal policy on changing name and gender for social security documents and passports was only recently made accessible to most transgender persons under the Obama Administration, and this is not established law, this is administration policy which can be changed on a whim.
How many more examples do you need? Or is your “out” the bit about others rights of conscience? If so, then your initial post was incredibly incomplete at best.

And for that matter, fuck other people’s alleged rights of conscience to discriminate again my people. They’re no better than the sheet-wearing bigot who wants to deny housing to a black couple, or fire someone for being Jewish, or even refuse to hire someone for a job because they’re Chinese. All under the guise of “religious freedom.” Like OMG, I don’t even have to imagine someone saying “transgender prisoners deserve to be gang raped repeatedly or placed in solitary, because Jesus?” Because I’ve heard people argue that in effect, to my face.
