I hope that during the Democratic convention, Bill’s speech quotes the same passages from Michelle’s speech. As an homage to the Obamas and a shot at Trump. Plus, I would find it funny.
Trump barely bothers to vet his own speeches. I can’t see him taking the time to do all that work himself when he can delegate it to someone he’ll refuse to pay for it.

I mean, this is, once again, an example of when a woman threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down.

The rickroll has got to be the most hilarious moment of the campaign so far. If not ANY campaign ever. And having said that, I eagerly await it being topped before the convention is over. That speechwriter deserves induction to the Ratfuck Hall of Fame. Bravo!
I agree. This controversy isn’t, or at least shouldn’t be, about Melania Trump herself. For me, it’s more of a hilarious distraction from all of the other Trump campaign shit, the stuff that’s so scary and fucking demented that you can’t laugh at it.
As others have noted, the general sentiments are pretty common, but there are dozens and dozens of ways to express them. The sentence structure and the wording and the overall arrangement of the section clearly demonstrates that it has been lifted.
“She was widely read enough to appreciate my literary wit but not so widely read that she knew my sources. I like that in a woman.” - David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
The initial contract called for $10,000 to write Melania’s speech. When Trump got the speech, he told the writer that it was a poor job, and he’d only pay him $5,000, and if the writer didn’t accept it, Trump would tell the world that he was crappy writer. This is much more Trump’s style of business.
The clever writer had put a couple of poison pills in the speech though; if he had been paid in full, he would have taken them out of the final copy.
No, the mockery is mainly because the potential Republican First Lady stole her lines from the current Democratic First Lady. The one that the GOP wants us to know is terrible and horrible and wants children to eat vegetables like a freedom-stealing bugbear.
Had Melania lifted lines from Nancy Reagan or Laura Bush or even Ann Romney, this wouldn’t have blown up anywhere near the same way. It’s all about her cribbing from the Obamas for a major RNC speech.
And the next line in the song is “never going to run around, and desert you.” Someone needs to do the video with images of Mrs T 1 and 2 superimposed over that line.
The more I think about it, this whole campaign seems like one huge farce.

I won’t even bother to go on except to say that there’s a little part of me that’s starting to almost buy into the idea that the whole thing is intended to throw the election to the Democrats.
leftfield, this is potentially warnable. You must have the John Oliver add on that changes ‘Trump’ to ‘Drumpf’. Find. But please be aware that it changes the text in quote boxes and - on the SDMB - those are sacred. I’m not warning you now but…
Everyone. From this point on in this thread such events will earn warnings.
If instead of a drinking game, somebody came up with a “Donate to A Democrat” game when certain events occurred, this convention could be pretty lucrative for the Dems…
