The Republican Party is the Party of Evil

I realize we’ve gone way off the topic of Republicans, but as a single data point: the Croydon Canal in South London in the early 19th century became economically unviable when the railroads came in. The canal got sold to the railroad who filled it in and built the rail line on it. So it does happen.

Wiki on the Croydon Canal is interesting. The canal was never especially profitable and it makes sense to me that the best use of its land in a congested area (South London) would be supplant it with a railroad. Parts of it persisted as boating lakes and the like for a while.

Still, it’s more typical for barge traffic to continue for a while, followed by canal repurposing the following century, than quickly vanish.

To yank this thread gently back to the present day, the idea that simple malice is part of the DNA of the modern MAGA GOP certainly explains the impulse to give the man who murdered George Floyd a moment of silence.

These people are fucking insane.

Mike Flynn, Trump acolyte, former general and all around embarrassment is now a registered Russian agent (once removed).

MAGA Freaks Out After Trump Ally Registers as Foreign Agent

It looks like Michael Flynn isn’t all that America First.

Far-right blogger Scott McMahan posted a Foreign Agents Registration Act form Monday that was dated October 2025, and stated that Donald Trump’s former national security adviser was now making $100,000 per month from the Republic of Srpska. The confederated entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina is run by Milorad Dodik, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“$100,000 per month?” right-wing troll Phillip Buchanan, known as Catturd, wrote on X in response.

Sebastian Gorka, the pugnacious far-right influencer angling to be the next head of the National Counterterrorism Center, pointed out that Flynn may very well have broken the law.

So, now they’re freaking out?

Using their own data:roll_eyes:

Whitewashing history

Imagine flying 179 combat missions for your country, get promoted to four star general, and nearly 50 years after you die, your portrait that recognises your service, gets removed because you are black.

That was a very moving and painful piece. Thanks for posting it!

Just saw this exchange reposted on Facebook. (Clay Higgins is a Republican who represent Louisiana’s third congressional district.)

Rep. Clay Higgins
You millennial leftists who never lived one day under nuclear threat can now reflect upon your woke sky.
You made quite a non-binary fuss to save the world from intercontinental ballistic tweets.

Replaying to RepClayHiggins
We’re not entirely sure what this tweet is supposed to mean, and we’re literally the dictionary.

Basically what it always means:

(An imaginary quote, to be clear. They are never that self-aware in real life.)

True. But you’d think Higgins would hire at least one person who is capable of writing a coherent sentence. It’s not that uncommon a skill.

Sounds like a Beck lyric. Rather poetic, really!

But we can’t take down statues of traitors, because that would be erasing history!

He does know, does he not, that we Millennials quite clearly remember the Cold War?

I mean, most of them probably don’t. Millennial is what, 80-95, roughly? So maybe about a third, those born 80-85 remember it. I have a hard time believing anyone under 5 understood or had clear memories of the cold war, and obviously later millennials wouldn’t.

I have a hard time believing that anyone, of any age, understood the Cold War.

But even without understanding it, the fear was definitely there.

Let’s find out!

FWIW, I was born in 1979, and while we were fascinated with nuclear weapons as kids, I never felt anything akin to “fear.” Never did duck and cover, never watched the news in terror. It was a hypothetical threat but it never really came up, and then it was “over” when I was 10.

I was born in 1960. No real fear because leaders at least knew what it meant. MAD.

Trump does not understand or care. And, at 80 years old probably thinks he has nothing to lose, because he dosen’t give a shit about anyone anyway.

The ultimate He who dies with the most toys, wins.

I was born in 1950. I didn’t see the “Duck and Cover” short until The Atomic Cafe came out but I remember full well the fear of an unanticipated atomic attack. At my elementary school we were issued badges color-coded by what direction we lived from the school. A staff member would lead us back to our neighborhoods on foot. This was particularly acute during the Cuban missile stand-off.

During my stint on the navy I worked at direction-finding sites, working to pinpoint Soviet surface assets. Even today, when I see SovCit I have to correct my first impression from “Soviet Citizen.”

J D Vance, how the hell did he get into Yale Law School? Schooled by CNN.
