Made to whom, the more radical Democrats or the House as a whole? If the latter it should go the same way as Senate promises regarding SCOTUS confirmations.
I kind of hope the caucus that more or less forced that agreement is reconsidering it. Pelosi has been a remarkably effective Speaker, both times. There are things that I wish she’d do that she hasn’t (or at least hasn’t been seen to), but overall I’ve been happy with her leadership.
Ditto. I hope the progressive wing of the party has at this point realized the caucus as a whole isn’t as progressive or as unified as they thought it was and they just aren’t going to get as much done on their own as they thought.
She’d be raked over the coals by some media outlets if she reneged; more than she already is, if that’s possible. I think she should keep her commitment, just for the sake of integrity.
However, I don’t know a lot about how the Speaker is chosen. If she steps down, and then runs against other contenders on an equal footing, that would be okay. I don’t know if the selection process is done that way.
I think its just by caucus vote, so there is no structural advantage to being the incumbent, just political advantage. I don’t see anyway that she could run for speaker without being accused of reneging, unless as Great_Antibob suggests the leaders of the liberal side of the Democrats release her from her agreement and whole heartedly support her continuing as speaker.
Either way the Republicans will crow about it. IF she stays, they will accuse her of being dictatorial by holding on to power with an iron fist despite her promises. If she leaves will take credit for her resigning and claiming that their forcing her to resign proves that they were right about her all along.
It is my hope that Rep. Pelosi is training her replacements. She’s got AOC and others there who are young, smart and ambitious; partnering between them all for education and training on how to attain future goals and roles would be beneficial.
(Yes: I realize that both parties have to agree to do this; it shouldn’t be a difficult decision IMO.)
She can handle it.
Another good Republican sleazebag.
Fuck these fucking people. If you are still a Republican, fuck you.
Actually, I agree with her that Cheney and Kinzinger should be barred from GOP meetings. I think the GOP should do whatever they can to kick them out of the party, in fact. Come to think of it, I would support a purge of any and all suspect persons in elected office from the GOP if they aren’t trumpy enough.
That’ll show 'em!
Kinzinger has very specifically called for investigating any role Lauren Bobert might have had in the January 6th insurrection. No wonder she’s going after him.
From this NY Times Magazine interview
Q: Do you suspect that some members of Congress were aware of what was going to happen that day and supported it?
A: I won’t name names but yes, I do have that suspicion. I will say, if you just looked at Twitter - the whole reason I brought my gun and kept my staff home and told my wife to stay in the apartment was looking at Twitter. I saw the threats. When Lauren Boebert - I will call her out by name - tweeted “Today is 1776”, I don’t know what that meant other than this is the time for revolution. Maybe it was a dumb tweet she didn’t mean. Fine. I’ll give her that credit for now. But if you have members of Congress that were involved in nurturing an insurrection, heck yeah, we need to know.
I fucking hate these people.
No kidding. Why are we hearing from terrorist supporters who don’t want an investigation into how they supported terrorists?
What does MTG mean by “exercise their Second Amendment rights” when vaccine door knockers come ‘round? They should bare their arms for the needle?
Cool. I agree.
I like AOC a lot, but no way I’d want her to be Speaker, even though she is clearly demonstrating much greater political flexibility than I gave her credit for initially. I’m hoping it’s someone like Val Demmings, Henry Cuellar, or Juaquin Castro. Someone with experience, who can count votes, and who’s able to bring two camps together.
AOC will be Speaker - at least - after most of this board is six feet under. Assuming Republicans haven’t permanently destroyed democracy in the interim, the political landscape in 2040 will be very different than it currently looks.
I think AOC will run for NY Senator or Governor, and if she wins that (which is likely, IMO), then President, some day. I don’t think her path is towards House leadership. I think she’s enormously talented in political communication, possibly as good as Obama or Bill Clinton, which means she’d be more “useful” for the party as a potential Prez candidate than House leader. But we’ll see.
I Want to donate to Adam Kinzinger. I searched but found 3 sites taking donations. Chances are at least 2 of them are a scam. Anyone know the true donation site?
I can see AOC possibly running for some other higher office, though I don’t know how successful she would be. Winning a heavily Democratic Congressional District is one thing; winning across an entire state (or the country) is very different. Not to mention she will likely have to contend with the fact that she is likely going to be made into the new Hillary by the right wing (i.e. the apparent cause of all our nations ills).
Very possible. But I think she’s orders of magnitude better at political communication than Hillary, and crucially, she’s very young and has many, many years to get more skilled and experienced. Democrats should be ecstatic that we have such a young and talented politician in office, even if you don’t agree with her on some issues.
