The Revolution WILL be Spotified

I’ve found myself blasting Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” in my truck like it’s 1994 the past couple days.

Help me flesh out a Spotify playlist of protest/revolution/fuck-the-fascists songs.

Don’t care about genre.

The other two on my list right now are “This is America” by Childish Gambino and “American Idiot” by Green Day.

Tom Morello - “Black Spartacus Heart Attack Machine”

Woody Guthrie - “All You Fascists Bound To Lose”

Dead Kennedys - “Nazi Punks Fuck Off”

Go to the source: Gil Scott-Heron.

And this came out a decade later.

And this one too!

Anything by RAtM works - “Wake Up”, “Bulls on Parade”, etc.

“Know Your Enemy” by Green Day

“Fuck tha Police” by NWA

“Fight the Power” by Public Enemy

“Youth Against Fascism” by Sonic Youth

“God Is A Bullet” - Concrete Blonde

Jesse Welles is a terrific new protest singer:

Spotify has Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Protst Songs of All Time” as a playlist.

Jesse Welles is great.

All due respect, I want the Dope’s, not Rolling Stones’.

I went through my protest playlist, and have a few more recommendations:

In the folk category:

  • “Eve of Destruction” - Barry McGuire
  • “Talkin’ bout a Revolution” - Tracy Chapman
  • “All You Fascists Bound To Lose” - Woody Guthrie

And the crank-it-up category:

  • “Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)” - Run the Jewels
  • “War Pigs” - Black Sabbath
  • “Racist Sexist Boy” - The Linda Lindas
  • “Freedom” - Beyonce

1933 by Frank Turner (though I think at this point we are at 1937 at least :frowning: )

Prophets of Rage (IMO heavily underated Rage Against the machine + Public Enemy colab) Unfuck the World

https://youtu.be/3eDQQfYOV48?si=8t_JjLXmkSotrm5f

Running the World by Jarvis Cocker

https://youtu.be/ahzNnXex5fY?si=aEQ4lELbi6UrGbR4

Though a lot the pre-Trump (and Johnson/Farage in the UK) era protests songs like that last one , despite being an awesome, song seem a bit dumb now IMO. Yeah c__nts have always been running the world but there are c__nts and c__nts, and the 2006 c__nts seem pretty OK now compared to the Nazi c__nts currently running the world. :frowning:

Much of The Clash’s repertoire would be relevant here, starting with this one

On the Day It Finally Happens by Malört & Savior.

Very, very good choice. I’ll add “White Riot”

.

“Disciple” - The Warning

Kill the system
Kill the man
Strip the power from their hands

Oh and…

It Makes Me Violent by Bob Vylan

“Seven Nation Army” - White Stripes

“This Is Why We Fight” - The Decemberists

Expand this to include social media and this is as relevant now as it was in the early 90s when I first heard it…

Television, the Drug of the Nation, The Disposable Heros of Hiphoprisy

[Gestures vaguely towards Rise Against][/]

(ETA: and gestures towards Les Misérables. Punk as fuck)

Honestly I love this question but the examination of my prefered music to find examples could result in a full-length essay and it’s Friday and I’m drunk and tired.

Punks are generally pro-revolution.

Here’s a pertinent one from the rather awesome band MakeWar:

Hands on the Tyrant (link goes to bandcamp)

The revolution will be televised! Don’t rest your heads until they pay. For all the lives that were taken, we’ll be free again.
