I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy two weeks ago and was wondering what other Dopers who read it thought. Interesting book, especially the style of writing but it had a few too many good luck incidents in it for me. Anyway, curious about other member’s opinions on the book.
I couldn’t put it down – very compelling. And depressing and bleak and heartbreaking. It’s a love story, isn’t it, between the father and son? It’s very spare and underwritten, compared to McCarthy’s other books.
A depressing love story when you realize everything done is really pointless. My only compaint with the book would be that they had too many lucky discoveries.
I didn’t have any problems with the lucky discoveries. Wasn’t there only one that was really big?
Consider that dad and the kid were operating on a different level from the cannibals. What would interest them wouldn’t interest the bad guys.
The book made me wonder to what lengths I’d go to survive, or to save my child – for what? Definitely lots of stuff to ponder.
