Nah. Cobb County Georgia is 25% Black, lower than other counties in Georgia at 31% Black population, and yet Cobb County was the 3rd highest receipient of Federally funded programs and services in the nation.
It’s amazing, though, how many people believe* to the contrary: that “all my tax money”** from federal taxes goes to the urban/Democratic states and “all my tax money” from state taxes goes to the urban/Democratic counties and cities within their own state. In other words, the urban states and the urban counties are a “drain” on the respective treasuries.
Read the comments to almost any online news story on public capital improvements in a big city, especially transit projects that will daily serve tens or hundreds of thousands of commuters, and you’d swear the state Dep’t of Transportation spends every penny of its appropriation in the big cities. Then go to the website of the DOT of one of the urban states (IL, NY, MA, or the like) and see where they’re actually doing capital projects, and if anything the rural counties will be receiving more than their population-proportional share. Don’t confuse the online rural Eeyores with those facts, though.
*That it’s a belief based on gut feelings, which have then been fed and nurtured, rather than a fact only makes it that much more strongly entrenched. You can’t reason someone out of something he didn’t reason himself into.
**Yes, it’s hyperbole – I’m sure if you (figuratively) pin them down they’d grudgingly admit some federal and state tax dollars are spent in their own county & state.
It wasn’t candid. It was stupid and hypocritical. Romney is literally one of the most entitled men in America. We are writing about someone who was born to a rich family. He was given a free college and law school degree and thousands of dollars in stock from his family. He was also given a free house house and a business loan.
He talks about middle class entitlements but very few members of the middle class will ever get even a tiny bit of what he’s gotten without a single string attached.
And what did he do with it? Invested in Swiss bank accounts to avoid American taxes. Created crappy jobs. Got government handouts. Bought three houses including a twelve million dollar beach home. Bought his wife a dancing horse.
No, it’s not. That’s nowhere even close to what I said, and the fact that you believe so leads me to believe that you’re just interested in arguing whatever straw man you want to set up. What I said is that those Southern states tend to have a higher percentage of the population of food stamps because of large minority population who vote Democrat.
Anyway, let’s illustrate what I said. Let’s look at Mississippi, which seems to be the liberal punching bag. Going back to the graph posted earlier, 20.6% of the population in on food stamps, which appears to be the highest in the nation. Mississippi is also the most conservative state. Now, as the argument will go, that just proves that Republicans are hypocrites. However, the biggest reason why Mississippi has the highest percentage of the population on food stamps is because Mississippi has a large Black population (37% of the total population), who votes overwhelmingly Democratic, who are on food stamps. In total, Whites constitute 35.7% of food stamp recipients; Blacks 22.0%; and Hispanics 10.0%. You see, Blacks make up a larger percentage of food stamp recipients compared to their total population while Whites makes up a lower percentage compared to their total population. Hispanics also make up a larger percentage of food stamp recipients compared to their total population, but not to the same degree as Blacks.
In Mississippi, there are approximately 246,000 households who participate in SNAP (page 69). Of those households, 28.4% of them are White, 63.6% are Black and 0.4% are Hispanic (page 76). Even assuming that 90% of Whites are registered Republicans and 90% of Blacks are registered Democrats, you can clearly see that the majority of food stamp recipients support.
Go back to the posted graph, look at percentage of the population on food stamps, then go to the posted link above, look at that state’s total minority population as a percentage of the total population then look at the demographic breakdown of house holds receiving food stamps. You will notice that, as a general rule, those states which have a population made up by a greater degree of minorities (either Black, Hispanic or other) also have a high percentage of the population of food stamps, though you can find a few outliers (like Oregon, Maine, Michigan, West Virginia and to a lesser extent Tennessee, which has a relatively high population of Blacks but a greater percentage of Whites receiving food stamps). And, before some smart ass tries to say it, no it’s not a perfect correlation, but there is a correlation. It’s just like states, in general, with lower minority populations tend to have a lower percentage of the population on food stamps.
In summary, the fact that Southern states may have more people on food stamps is mostly a consequence of the fact that they have higher minority populations, especially Blacks. Minorities, mind you, who tend to vote Democrat. States cannot dictate who can and cannot live there, so they shouldn’t be punished for it.
The reason why why foreign medical doctors have a hard time getting licensed in the US is because residency spots are limited, and the increased number of medical schools in recent years (without a comparable increase in residencies) is only making it more difficult. I’m a medical student currently (in the US) and this has been quite a concern even for us, as the number of US medical school graduates are projected to exceed the number of spots by the next few years.
So why don’t we just increase residency spots? Well, unfortunately, residencies in the US are primarily funded by, guess what, Medicare, and currently, there’s a freeze on spending for increased residency spots.
And yes, rural doctors are few and far between. I’m not really convinced that licensing foreign physicians would really fix this, as I’m not convinced that foreign physicians are flocking to rural areas to begin with. Currently, the National Health Service Corps probably does the most to get recent med school graduates to practice in underserved areas, but funding for that is pretty limited- I had a friend who had to apply twice before she was accepted.
Have you noticed that the attempts to smear Obama (be it “redistribution” or “cling to guns and religion” all rely on taking quotes out of their larger context.
By contrast, Romney’s statements look very bad even when you quote the whole damn thing.
Are you implying that the southern states have more people on food stamps because the minority populations vote in Democrats in the hopes that they will make those stamps more plentiful and easier to get? Or what exactly?
Earlier today on FOX, a lead-in to an upcoming story played the Obama statement on redistribution: “I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution - because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody’s got a shot.” They conveniently left out the bolded part. It seems their goal is to paint Obama as an unrepentant socialist, or worse, rather than someone who wants to preserve one of the basic ideas of American society, that everyone has the chance to make a better life for themselves. Par for the course for FOX of course.
I’m just asking an honest question, Omg. If I’ve missed your overall point, I apologize. You quoted a lot of statistics and provided a lot of data, but I don’t know what exactly you’re getting at, that’s all. Enlighten me.
Omg, to flesh this out a bit, you mentioned more than once food stamps among minorities along with the fact that they vote Democrat. Can you not see how I might ask the question that I did?
