Argh…recently I’ve encountered more than a few people who, in the midst of an argument concerning ethics or morality or religion or law, will attempt to portray their opponents as hypocrites by saying something like this:
“The same people who are fighting for the rights of unborn children are the ones that also endorse the death penalty.”
or
“The same people who close their minds to the possibility of paranormal phenomenae are the ones that also go to church and pray to God.”
And so forth.
Really? How the fuck do you know that I fall neatly into your narrowly-defined stereotype?
I think that the same people who make these kinds of statements are also the ones that will say, “well, you can’t prove that God doesn’t exist, therefore my belief in Him is justified.”
People who complain that they are the victims of overbroad generalization are the same sort of people who make sweeping generalizations.

I have to agree with the original rant, and expand on it… nothing kills a political debate faster than “… and the democrats always say X” or “…and these are the same guys who always say Y”.
But what’s even worse, imho, is the “and we all know that if a democrat did X, we’d never hear the end of it” or “if a republican did Y, the press would hound them into oblivion”.
I mean, how do you possibly respond to such a statement? It just kills the discussion dead.
