The SDMB is switching to paid subscriptions

If the deadline is noon, then I expect it is noon Central Time (Chicago time zone).

You can use your guest ID for 30 days.

Hmm… there must be not enough people taking the bait.

Pay to post on a message board? What an absurd idea.

Fallacy of exclusion. You are excluding the possiblity of any other reason that the deadline was extended. For example, it takes some time to activate a PayPal account.

I saw the extention as a way to help out people that were having trouble registering, not as a desperate plea for more money.

Some kids will have a hard time coming up with that I know a couple middle school students who write in questions as a team project in class

What about we Brits?Do we have to pay in dollars or will it automatically convert for us? And if I don’t have a credit card,do I just stick the notes in a brown bag and hide them under the stone by the door?

And I’m a guest in August posting on a thread that says guest accounts will be ended in April  Now how did I do that?

Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Board, Christine, we’re glad to have you with us.

I’m not sure how you were able to post to Ed’s announcement, I thought it was closed, so I’ve fixed your quote and merged it into the old thread. I hope that’s OK with you. (For those coming in late, Christine clearly hadn’t seen the old thread, so go easy on her.)

Just to catch you up, that announcement was made back in April, and we’ve been on a subscription basis for two or three months now, so this has been greatly discussed already. We need to update the front page, but frankly none of us have had the time.

We are aware that a few people will not be able to afford the $14.95. There is a thread somewhere in this forum where others have volunteered to help those who can’t afford it.

While there may be a few people who can’t afford $1.25 a month, the READER can’t afford the many many tens of thousands of dollars that the free Message Board was costing.
